Rumor: Sebastian Giovinco to Portland?

by Charlie Folkestad January 14, 2022
written by Charlie Folkestad

The Portland Timbers are interested in former MLS MVP Sebastian Giovinco, per Gianluca Di Marzio of Sky Sports.

#Calciomercato | Possibile approccio dei @TimbersFC per riportare Sebastian #Giovinco in #MLS dopo l'esperienza al @TorontoFC https://t.co/VT9t2Fmjox

— Gianluca Di Marzio (@DiMarzio) January 14, 2022

“A concrete negotiation could start soon,” the translated article reads.

Giovinco, who will turn 35 later this month, spent his last two seasons at Al-Hilal in Saudi Arabia. His contract reached a mutual termination last August.

Giovinco in MLS

Giovinco shined in MLS after leaving Juventus for Toronto FC.

The attacking midfielder burst onto the scene in 2015, winning MLS MVP, MLS Newcomer of the Year, and the MLS Golden Boot. He also led the Reds to a Canadian treble (MLS Cup, Supporters’ Shield, Canadian Cup) in 2016.

The Italian played 142 matches for Toronto FC across all competitions from 2015-18, bagging 83 goals and 57 assists during that span. He is considered a TFC club legend and was named one of MLS’ top 25 players of all-time last season.

MLS interest

The former Juventus player has been flirting with an MLS return for a while now.

Last month, he expressed interest in returning to Toronto during an exclusive interview with Laura Armstrong of the Toronto Star. He even attended a TFC match. However, Toronto signed Serie A star Lorenzo Insigne instead.

The former Juventus player was also linked to the Los Angeles Galaxy about a year ago.

Timbers’ need

From a roster standpoint, this makes sense. The Timbers may need to fill a playmaking midfield spot soon, unless they can re-sign Sebastián Blanco. Portland are set to lose Diego Valeri from the same position as well.

The Timbers have one Designated Player roster spot open without Blanco. Giovinco wanted to be a DP in a Toronto return.

Blanco removed the Timbers from his Instagram bio yesterday amid a lengthy offseason negotiation saga.

Whitecaps take 4 out of 6 Points to start 2021 season

by Michael Martinez April 27, 2021

Welcome back to the 2021 regular season!! I for one am happy there is no MLS Is Back tournament this time around. Don’t get me wrong, it was a nice concept last year, but overall pretty useless. A lot of players opted out of the tournament and it doesn’t carry much merit. I mean look at what the Timbers just posted…

Something new. #MLSisBack pic.twitter.com/gNcCb4pDuq

Just embarrassing really.

ANYWAYS, we are back with a new season, new look, and of course, some new hot takes as well. We’re going to start off with a double match review! Since I missed the first match, I figured I may as well knock both out of the way. It will also be a bit different than my usual post match reviews so just know, this will NOT be the norm. This is going to be a long one so y’all better be ready!

The first match of the 2021 season was against Cascadian rivals, the Portland Timbers. We started off the campaign with a win right off the bat! Thanks to a 49th minute goal from none other than Lucas Cavallini and some stout defence, the match ended 1-0 in favor of the Whitecaps.

Post Match Thoughts:

This match was a lot of fun to watch to be honest. The team had some great momentum going into the match based on preseason. MDS praised his team’s ability to press hard and transition quick… We saw the team press well, but it feels like he may have exaggerated a bit. There were moments where the team reacted a bit late and we could have put the game away sooner. That’s just my opinion and I hope the team can prove me wrong.

“I really wanted this win for the Vancouver fans, and everybody that is (at) home and not being able to be at the stadium not being able to be with us,” Dos Santos told reporters after the game. “You know when you play Portland, you can only remember all the fans in Vancouver, and that that one is for them.”

In terms of the overall performance, it would be hard to describe it as masterclass, but the battle effort was strong. Our defence was stingy and the offense came to life when they needed to, making it a pretty solid victory. There are still a few tactics that might need to be weeded out, especially in terms of how they generate chances, which could change with the signing of a #10. But with it still being early in the season, you have to be quite happy with what the Whitecaps did in this one, because as Dos Santos said in the post match presser, there is still work to be done going forward.

What really stood out to me in this match was the team’s shape. The boys kept it tight and utilized the fullbacks. It is something that we started to see at the end of the 2020 season and MDS kept it going into the first match of this new season. If the team can continue to build their defensive shape and tweak the offensive game, then I have no reason to believe that the Whitecaps won’t at least make a playoff spot.

Time for match number 2!! Sorry this is such a long read… I just felt it would be easier having both in one piece rather than two separate ones back to back. So yeah, here we are.

Image via Whitecaps FC Twitter

This last Saturday, our boys took on our Canadian rivals, Toronto FC. Thanks to a strong second half effort filled with a pair of goals, the Whitecaps had the chance to take 3 points from Toronto! But thanks to a defensive blunder in the 83rd minute, the match ended 2-2 with the boys leaving Orlando with 1 point instead of all 3.

Match Stats:

Scoring Summary:

7’ – TOR – Luke Singh

55’ – VAN – Cristian Dájome

70’ – VAN – Andy Rose (assisted by Cristián Gutiérrez)

83’ – TOR – Jonathan Osorio

Possession: TOR 52.5% – VAN 47.5%

Post Match Thoughts:

If you would have asked me if I would be happy with a draw against Toronto before the match, you would have gotten a swift yes. But this match was not one to be happy leaving with one point. If anything, it’s a bit painful really. The Whitecaps played their hearts out after being down 0-1 at the half. The fact that they fought their way back to make it 2-1 is always exciting to see. Especially after what we have seen the past couple years from MDS’s Whitecaps.

“This is a good point,” Whitecaps head coach, Marc Dos Santos, said after the game. “But then, with the last chance that we had, the positive thing is that when I spoke with the players in the middle of the field, they were upset. They were upset about not getting the three points, so that’s a very good sign.”

The team came out ready to play right from the bat. Keeping that same tempo from their previous win against the Timbers. Toronto capitalized early and held on until the half. Just like last week, the Whitecaps came out of the halftime break full of energy. Thanks to the two second half goals from Dájome and none other than Andy Rose, it looked like we were going to take 3 points from Toronto of all teams! Then the 83rd minute happened… I don’t have many words for this so you can just watch the clip…

— Toronto FC (@TorontoFC) April 24, 2021

Like I said, I do not have words to describe this goal.

Despite that absolute howler, it was a pretty good performance from the Whitecaps. However, as they did well to battle back from down 1 goal in tough weather conditions. Naturally, they, and the fans as well, will feel like it was 2 points dropped instead of 1 point gained, but as MDS noted in the post match presser, picking up 3 points at home and 1 on the road from their first two games is pretty darn good in the big picture.

Lastly, speaking about a couple new guys, it’s important to bring up the debuts of Caio Alexandre and Bruno Gaspar off of the bench in this one, as they finally got onto the pitch. They didn’t get to show much, but Alexandre looked tidy on the ball, while Gaspar had a few good flashes, so hopefully we can see more of them next week against Colorado.

As I mentioned much earlier, the fact that they picked up 4 out of 6 points against early-season favorites Portland and Toronto can only be seen as a positive. Especially when you take into account how the team has looked over the last few seasons. The team looks exciting, the players look hungry, and the fans are ready to see this team succeed. I can’t wait to see what this team does next.

Unbeaten in two matches, the Whitecaps now head back to Utah to prepare for a Western Conference clash against the Colorado Rapids next Sunday, May 2. Kickoff is at 7 p.m. PT live on TSN1/3 and AM730.

Whitecaps Kick Off Season in Utah

by Michael Martinez March 13, 2021
written by Michael Martinez

The time has come!! It’s officially preseason for the Whitecaps and we finally have news on who we’re playing to start the season AND where. Surprise, we are not starting the season in Vancouver due to COVID restrictions, and rightly so. Similar to how we did it in Portland last season, the team will be staying with Real Salt Lake in Utah to ensure we play games.

Image via Vancouver Whitecaps FC

Image via Vancouver Whitecaps FC

After this first month of the 2021 Training Camp, the boys will head south to Utah in April to start the MLS regular season. The Whitecaps will be training at America First Field during their stay in . Due to travel restrictions between the U.S. and Canada, Vancouver, along with the other two Canadian MLS clubs in CF Montreal and Toronto FC, will begin the season in the U.S. with each club hosting matches in a U.S. city:

  • Whitecaps in Sandy, Utah Rio – Tinto Stadium

  • Toronto FC in Orlando, Florida – Exploria Stadium

  • CF Montreal in Miami, Florido – Inter Miami CF Stadium

It seems to me that the other two got super lucky with their temporary location placement but that’s just me. I know I’d rather be in Florida than Utah. Then again maybe not cause COVID.

Big boss, Axel Schuster on starting play in Utah,

“We are very thankful to John Kimball and the entire Real Salt Lake organization for welcoming us into their family, their facilities, and providing a home away from home,” “We will have a first-class set-up in Utah including an exclusive training pitch, gym and locker room. Also, special credit to our operations team as this is a monumental undertaking and player care is an important focus at our club.”

The Whitecaps will start their second decade in MLS as they “host” Cascadia rivals Portland Timbers on Sunday, April 18. This is a real tough way to kick off the season. We have not had the best record against the Timbers as of late. While we barely hold the overall advantage against the rags, 40W-30L-18D, we have still lost the last 4 meetings. This will be a true test for the boys, especially for the new guys. Let’s hope for a solid start!

The ‘Caps will then head to Orlando, Florida for their second match of the season, to face fellow Canadians Toronto FC on Saturday, April 24. In 2020, the cross-country rivals faced each other three times, with the home side winning each time. The first two at BMO Field in Toronto, and Whitecaps winning 3-2 in their memorable return home at BC Place back in September. Altogether, the Whitecaps have another winning record of 40W-34L-16D against Toronto, tracing all the way back to their NASL years. When it comes to MLS though, we are 5W-6L-2D against Toronto. Which is never favorable, but I will take those odds.

Shchuster on our opening opponents and the possibility of playing at home this season,

“We are looking forward to kicking off the 2021 MLS season against two of our rivals, Portland and Toronto,” “We will absolutely miss seeing and hearing our fans at BC Place to start the season. Rest assured, our main objective is to play as many of our home games in Vancouver as possible. We’re working very closely with the league and public health officials and look forward to a time when our fans can safely attend matches at BC Place once again.”

PTFC Weekly Roundup – Surgeries, signings, and more

by Charlie Folkestad November 17, 2020
written by Charlie Folkestad

The Portland Timbers have been idle since drawing LAFC 1-1 on Decision Day last Sunday, November 8th. While nothing has transpired on the pitch, there’s still plenty to talk about behind the scenes of The Only Club that Matters. Let’s review some of PTFC’s most recent news.

Jarek’s Surgery

Timbers Designated Player Jarosław Niezgoda had successful surgery on the torn ACL in his left knee last week. The injury was sustained in the waning minutes of Portland’s 1-0 win over Vancouver on November 1st.

Jarek’s recovery is expected to take 6-8 months.

World Cup Qualifying

Felipe Mora was called up for the Chilean first team’s World Cup Qualifying matches and started in their 2-0 win against Peru. Mora recorded one shot on target and drew four fouls in 84 minutes. Speaking of Peru, Andy Polo logged 13 minutes in a substitute appearance in that same match, completing all three of his passes and a successful dribble with just six touches.

Peru face Argentina tomorrow (Tuesday, November 17th) while Chile will play Venezuela. Both teams are on the outside looking in for the CONMEBOL qualifying spots.

More importantly for Timbers fans, both players will have to miss the first round of the playoffs to comply with the mandatory quarantine period.

Jebo up for humanitarian award

Jeremy Ebobisse was named a finalist for the MLS Works Humanitarian of the Year Award along with LAFC’s Mark-Anthony Kaye and Toronto’s Justin Morrow. The Timbers Army’s Supporters’ Player of the Year was a big part of MLS’ Black Players for Change group forming, as well as forming the Educate, Elevate, Engage initiative on a more local level.

Hunter Sulte signed as Homegrown Player

The Timbers signed 18-year-old Alaska native Hunter Sulte to a Homegrown contract on November 11th. Sulte (pronounced “SULT”) has been with the club since joining the Timbers Academy in 2016 and made 31 saves in 8 appearances for T2 in the USL Championship.

Listed at 6’7” and 195 lbs, Sulte is now the physically-largest player on Portland’s roster. He is currently presumed to be the fourth-string ‘keeper behind Steve Clark, Jeff Attinella, and Aljaz Ivacic.

Thorns: Tobin Heath is gone for good

NWSL’s newest expansion team, Racing Louisville FC, selected the playing rights for Tobin Heath in the Expansion Draft last Thursday, November 12th. Heath, who is currently 32, is currently playing for Manchester United in England and has been one of the key parts of the Thorns organization since the inaugural 2013 season.

Dos Diegos land on best-selling kits list

Diego Valeri and Diego Chará were both included in MLS’ 25 best-selling jerseys of 2020 list. Valeri clocked in at #11 while Chará was not far behind at #13. Carlos Vela, Chicharito, and Josef Martinez were the top three finishers.

Vote!

The American Presidential election is over, but you can still exercise your right to vote on MLS Goal and Save of the Year honors. Andy Polo’s volley against LA Galaxy and Steve Clark’s double-save on Chicharito in the MLS is Back Tournament are up for the respective titles.

Let’s Call it a Dub: Whitecaps Snap Losing Streak

by Michael Martinez September 10, 2020
written by Michael Martinez

It has finally happened! After a 4 game goal drought and a 5 game losing streak, the boys of Vancouver made it out of a tough tie with a win against Toronto FC. This is their third bout with Toronto in the last three weeks. With goals coming from Cavallini, a rocket from Baldisimo, and the winner from Nerwinski in the 76th minute. It was a cracker of a match for sure with both teams battling it out in the dying minutes to secure the win.

VWFC coming out in something we have not seen yet, a formation with 4 at the back?! This clearly played to their strengths all over the pitch. With the return of Erik Godoy, and a new formation that is not so defense, this was definitely an exciting match from the get go.

Match Recap

This was a high flying match and easily the most entertaining for the Whitecaps since the beginning of the season. In this 5 goal thriller, the Whitecaps pulled out an amazing and much needed win against Canadian Rivals, Toronto FC. This helps them go into the Canadian Championship Series. If they can keep this up, they can battle their way to that playoff spot. This was Erik Godoy’s first match back since his injury and he was slotted at Right Back. Since he is still gaining match fitness, he only played half of the match before being subbed off by Jake Nerwinski.

VWFC’s overall play was not the best as they got out played in nearly every stat recorded. Especially on shots and shots on goal, but of the 3 shots on goal they had, they converted. With them playing a 4-3-1-2 formation, you would have expected for the possession to be a little better, but that was not the case. TFC were clinical while they had the ball. While VWFC’s shape was better, it was still not good enough to stop Pozuelo, Osario, and Piatti from pinging balls left and right and center on them. The battle was won in the power of the counter attack. This is precisely what MDS wanted from his team today.

While they were not sitting back as much, the Whitecaps were not able to hold on to the ball for long. The first goal came from none other than Lucas Cavallini after a pin perfect cross from Ali Adnan.

Yes yes this is good content.

After a week off and having that time to go over tactical changes, the team gelled really well this match. It really  finally felt like Vancouver were able to exercise some demons with this performance, giving them something to build off of for the rest of the season. It might not have been exactly how they drew it up, as despite generating more chances today than they did in all 3 of their post tournament games before this one, they still relied on clinical finishing, some timely defending and a bit of luck. Taking into consideration the state of their slump, they really needed this win.

Another historic day for the Whitecaps as well as they came out with another 6 Canadians starters with two coming off the bench. Vancouver really seems to be cementing themselves as Canada’s team. This will be really exciting for the future of the men’s national team and their development. Left Back Ali Adnan has been the one bright spot in this Whitecaps team when he plays in the correct position. He had a breathtaking performance today as he brought in two assists as well as kept his side of the pitch locked down defensively. With his two assists this match, he is now the league leading defender in assists. If he can keep his form along with the rest of the team, they could be in for a more exciting season.

This match also gave plenty of hope for VWFC fans. While many are still hoping the team is sold and want MDS out, they are still hopeful after seeing this match. We will have to see how the next few games go and the rest of the season.

Check out the Whitecaps’ next match against Montreal Impact (again) at home on Sunday, September 13th at 6:30pm PST on ESPN+

Can the Whitecaps Get Back on Track with New Tactics?

by Michael Martinez September 5, 2020
written by Michael Martinez

Image via MLS

Image via MLS

Since the restart and the MLS is Back tournament, The  Whitecaps have struggled offensively. They have been shut out in 5 of their last 6 games as of late. Something needs to change quickly, or the fans will be calling for MDS to be out. This piece is going to give some insight on what the team can do to get back on track.

There is no doubt that the Vancouver Whitecaps have been in an offensive and creative rut as of late. That is evident in the stat line, and their overall play. They are winless since coming back from the restart, MLS is Back does not count; only had a single win anyway. Along with that, they have only registered 4 shots on target in 3 of those last 5 matches. That is the most damning stat. This just shows how little they are able to create in that final third. You have players like Cavalini and Reyna who can score goals, but with no service. This all starts with the shape in the midfield.

Luckily for them, their time is not quite up. While they may be last in the Canadian Championship race, they can still make their way back to the top. As long as they can make up the goal difference and win out the next four games against the other Canadian teams. In order to do that, they need some sort of creative outlet to get the ball to the forwards running through.

Looking at the Numbers:

Like I said above, 4 shots on goal in 3 matches is just something else. Almost impressive how low that number is. Their best chance was the penalty miss from Cavalini last week against Montreal. If you want to get into some of the advanced stats, they’ve only generated 1.7 Expected Goals in that time span as well. The roughly 20 shots they’ve sent towards goal haven’t been from quality positions, hence the limited xG and shots on targets that they’ve created. After scoring through all 6 games of preseason, and scoring in their first 3 games of the regular season, they’ve clearly hit a wall offensively as of late.

Due to this fact,  it has been a tough time for the defense. They have done well enough to only concede 9 goals in that 6 game span, yet they’ve only won one game in that time. That lone victory coming against the Chicago Fire at MLS is Back tournament. While those 9 goals is not anything to write home about, it is still better considering how much space they tend to give their opponents. 6 of these goals came from two games so there are some positives to look at. It is evident that Marc Dos Santos’ obsession with the 3-5-2 and 5-3-2 formations are working defensively.

Formation Shifts:

At the start of the season, MDS and the Whitecaps seemed to come out in a 4-3-3 formation nearly every game. It played to the strengths of the players and it made their play much more fluid and entertaining. The shutdown and restart changed all of that. Many players opted out or even came in injured. This did not help with the player selection process as many of those players were starters including Jaino Bikal, Erik Godoy, and Fredy Montero.

Not having his players has caused MDS to do some experimenting with the formations and playing players out of position. The go to has been the 5-3-2 formation. This formation in particular is interesting. It is VERY defensive minded and is usually used in cases where the team using it needs to bunker down against stringer attacking teams.

With this in mind, it is no wonder why they can’t seem to create many chances. They seem to just sit back and wait for the opposing offense to come forward.

Caps Press 1.png

The picture above just shows how far even the forwards are and they just allow the Montreal defenders to have time to set up the next pass. This does not even show the rest of the team’s shape.

Caps Press 2 part 2.png

The Whitecaps’ defensive shape is actually really impressive and very tight. Which is why they have not had many goals go through, besides the two where 3 goals went in. Despite this, they are still allowing too much space for the opposing teams to really do what they want.

With the team sitting so far back, they have no real way to get into an offensive rhythm and make those key passes to get some chances going. Not having the correct players for this formation definitely does not help either.

Andy Rose, who is a midfielder, is playing at CB. While he has excelled there and said in an interview last week that he enjoys it, it is not his natural position. There is also Cristian Dajome, who is playing wingback but is definitely an out and out winger. Dajome has struggled to make an impact in this role. The players at times, have no idea where to go next in the 5-3-2.

MDS has even tried to go with a 3-5-2, which is very similar to the 5-3-2 just a bit more offensive. The same struggles that the team faces applies to both formations. They tend to press higher a bit more in the 3-5-2, but it still leads to nothing since there are only 3 natural defenders on the field. This is where they get caught the most on the counter attack. This is shown in the last game against Montreal where Dajome was not in the correct spot and got beat down the line leading to a goal.

Which Formation Will Work Best:

Based on the players at MDS’s disposal, I firmly believe that a 4-3-3 or a 4-3-2-1 would get the most out of the players. Both formations allow the players to play in their natural positions and will give them more clarity in their roles on the pitch. This will also force them to be higher up the pitch to go fully into a press when they need to win the ball back when they lose the ball.

4-3-3

The 4-3-3 allows more bodies up the pitch and adds to the press. This tactic worked last week when they had Cavalini, Dajome, and Milinkovic as the front 3 in the latter part of the match. They also showed much more tenacity in the final third and were able to put together a few string of passes.  You could tell just by how the players were moving and playing that they were much more comfortable.

Even with them missing Bikel and Godoy, they can still provide a strong lineup to challenge for the Canadian series. While switching to a 4-3-3, the lineup could look like this:

Hasal

Nerwinski Veselinovic Cornellius Adnan

Owusu Rose       Teibert

Dajome Cavalini Milinkovic/Reyna

I really do think that this is their strongest lineup and doing this can get things back on track. They started the season with this formation, why not go back to it? Once everyone is fit and back, it will be easy to slot them in where they will be best. This also gives them more wiggle room on what kind of player they need to look for.

In an interview with Marc dos Santos before the match, I had asked him about his transfer targets and where they were looking. He said this, “We are looking for a creative midfielder, like a number 10, to help with the transition in the middle of the pitch. We are looking at players here in MLS along with the Canadian Premier League. European transfers are almost out of the question due to travel restrictions.” This gives us an insight on what to look for in the coming months.

4-3-2-1

With their transfer target in mind, this could set them up to come out in a 4-2-3-1 formation. This not only gives them options in the midfield, it also provides a more possession based game. It is the same formation that their Cascadian rivals, the Seattle Sounders, use in most of their games. The players will still be in their natural positions and give them more depth and width as well. This formation helps keep that control in the middle of the park, which is what MDS is so desperate for. It also makes the transitions from attacking to defending easier.

The lineup could possibly look like this:

Hasal

Nerwinski Veselinovic Cornelius Adnan

Owusu Teibert

Dajome   ??? Milinkovic

Cavalini

Even here, this is still a much stronger lineup than what they have been putting out as of late. All that is missing is the potential signing they are out looking for to fill the gap. Although I must say, while this 4-2-3-1 looks appealing, the 4-3-3 is going to be the best option moving forward for this Whitecaps team.

Where to Go from Here:

The Vancouver Whitecaps are at the bottom of the table so there is nowhere to go but up. The talent is there and you see it at various times throughout the matches. It’s just about consistency. This is how they move forward from here. Once MDS gets his tactics in line and gets the players in their correct positions, things will be smooth sailing.

In a press conference the other day MDS said this:

“The difficult thing for us right now is to find the best formula because of players that we lost or players that are not in, and that’s difficult for us. I feel that, yeah, you have answers in the second half that allows you to have an opportunity to grow as a team.  But man when you have so many guys out when we went to Orlando, and then back in and sellin
g In Beom (Hwang) that is the most creative midfielder we had, you ask yourself so many questions and what’s the best formula, how can we go about things and always being on the road also.”

“But (Michael) Baldisimo and even Pat (Metcalfe) I would say with these two games, they’re giving us options to also be in a 4-3-3. Hopefully (Janio) Bikel is going to come in soon, hopefully Erik [Godoy] we could use him soon, but right now we have to do the best right now with the players we have and that are available.”

This seems to indicate that he seems to want to go back to his previous 4-3-3 but he is just unsure. While I agree losing your three best players is a tough spot to be in but MDS is running out of options and out of excuses. If results do not start changing, there will be calls for him to be out. He is a great coach and a good tactician, he just needs to find a narrative and stick with it.

Check out Vancouver’s next match later today as they take on Toronto FC at home in BC Palace. Kick off is at 6:30 PST on ESPN+

End of the match, TFC wins 1-0

Overall the match itself was fairly underwhelming. Both teams started with a lot of intensity, which was a nice change of pace compared to the previous match on Tuesday. That all changed after a TFC goal in the 15th minute. From then on TFC controlled the match and the Whitecaps were left to chase the ball for the remaining 75 minutes. The Whitecaps’ one shot on target came in the second half, but it came out to be a fairly easy save for the TFC keeper. The rest of the match was nothing to write home about. Whitecaps played a lot better compared to the Tuesday match, but not well enough to top their Canadian rivals.

One of the few positive takeaways from the match was Thomas Hasal. The young academy graduate balled out. If it weren’t for his near record 7 saves, the score would have been a lot worse. If he continues like this, I can easily see him locking down the starting job for a long while. Another positive was the first start for VWFC academy graduate Patrick Metcalfe. He was the ninth Academy product to start for the Whitecaps just this season.

The season is not over for the Whitecaps, but they need to figure out the system that best suits them quickly. I have confidence that Marc dos Santos will get it settled, he just needs time. Once he gets it settled, and his players come back from injury, I can see things turning right around. They have a chance to get it done on Tuesday 8/25 against Thierry Henry and Montreal Impact.

Seattle wins second MLS Cup title, beat Toronto 3-1

Seattle Sounders FC secured their 2nd league title in 4 years, when they took down Toronto FC 3-1 Sunday. The win gives Seattle the 2-1 advantage in head-to-head MLS Cup matchups with Toronto.

The match wasn’t pretty and at times in the first half, it appeared that Toronto was the much better team today. They controlled the possession at 65.1% in the first half and had a passing accuracy ten percent better than Seattle. They, just like the Sounders, couldn’t find the back of the net during the opening half however. Halftime saw us deadlocked at zero.

With thoughts of 2016 swirling around in the crowds minds and penalty kicks being discussed in the press box, the idea of extra time and a shootout was in the air. The second half would assure those thoughts could stay as that, just thoughts.

Brian Schmetzer had been excellent when it comes to halftime adjustments. In just the playoffs, his squad had scored five goals while only allowing two against in that same frame. Once again, halftime adjustments lead to a victory.

“The halftime speech wasn’t ranting and raving or anything like that,” said Coach Schmetzer. “…it was more firm, look this is what we are going to do and what we are going to try and change”

In the 57th minute, Kelvin Leerdam opened up the scoring column. He received a crossed ball, quickly cut the ball back to his left and fired a shot across goal. With the help of Toronto’s Justin Morrow, the ball was deflected in goal. Seattle led 1-0 as 69,000 fans erupted.

With the momentum on their side and a packed stadium on their feet, Seattle started to lay it on.

In what was the most beautiful play of the match, the Sounders got their second goal. Svensson battled to regain possession of the ball, then after a pass back to him, he flicked the ball to Lodeiro. With just a perfectly placed touch pass, the ball was at the feet of Victor Rodriguez. He took his shot, and the ball went screaming by Toronto keeper Quentin Westberg.

Raúl Ruidíaz finished them off with a break away goal in the 90th. Jozy Altidore, who was questionable to play, did have a goal coming off the bench in the 93rd. But, the entire city knew this one was over and just a few moments later, the whistle blew and Seattle were on top once again.

With all of the confetti falling on the field and players embracing each other, the Philip F. Anschutz Trophy was delivered to captain Lodeiro. He took the trophy up on stage with the rest of his team and the fireworks began.

Victor Rodriguez was named the MLS Cup MVP after his game winning goal. A moment that meant a lot to the Sounder.

“I think I deserve that because I work a lot for every single day. Now I am going to enjoy this moment because I know I deserve that.”

He continued to speak about how this was a difficult season, as he battled with injuries all year long. He was happy that he got to celebrate this moment with his family and teammates.

Seattle still lost time of possession in the match, but won most other statistical categories. Duels won, shots on target, and, of course, goals.

With the win, the Sounders become, along with the Seawolves rugby team, the second winningest Seattle team based off of league titles won. They only trail the Seattle Storm who currently have 3 WNBA Championships.

MLS Cup preview: Toronto FC vs Sounders FC pt. 3

by Kevin Nesgoda November 8, 2019
written by Kevin Nesgoda
2019_MLSCup_NextMatch_ArticleHeader_TOR.jpg

For the third time in 4 years, Toronto and Seattle will battle for the MLS Cup championship this Sunday. The difference this time, Seattle will be the ones hosting the MLS’ biggest match.

In the two previous matches, which took place in 2016 and ’17, the two teams split time with the Philip F. Anschutz Trophy. Seattle won the first meeting on penalties, while Toronto got their revenge the following year with a 2-0 win in regulation. The two squads seemed to be destined to meet for a third time, to break the “tie”.

The paths that led to this Cup Final were vastly different for Seattle and Toronto.

How We Got Here:

For Toronto, their season was nearly another wash. After starting the season with 5 wins in their first 8 MLS matches, the team went winless in the following 8. Toronto looked like a team that was on the outside looking in when it came to the MLS playoffs, let alone the MLS Cup. But, the team found their groove as the season progressed and thanks to some favorable results from other clubs, found themselves as the East 4 seed as the playoffs began.

Entering the playoffs Toronto was down their top striker in Jozy Altidore, who suffered an injury at the end of the regular season. Some would have written them off with that fact, but Toronto ended up playing their best football of the season once the playoffs began. In their only home playoff match, they took down D.C. United and Wayne Rooney 5-1. They then went on the road and took down the top two seeds in the East in back-to-back weeks, NYCFC 2-1 and Atlanta 2-1. The team is riding a wave that seems to be all momentum heading into Sunday.

The Sounders had a much different season. A team that is used to highs and lows, actually never found themselves below the playoff line at any point during the season. In typical Seattle fashion, they got two key wins at the end of the regular season that locked up the West 2nd seed for them. That was huge, as it made sure they would host the first two rounds at home.

First up was FC Dallas. A match that took everything the Sounders had, saw them get the 4-3 win. Next was Real Salt Lake, who Seattle shutout 2-0. The big West showdown was then set between the new age LAFC and old school Sounders. The experience was the difference as Rave Green got the 3-1 win at Banc of California Stadium.

The stage was set for a championship trilogy.

The Matchup:

These two teams only met once during the regular season with Seattle coming away with the 3-2 win at home. But considering that game was all the way back in April, not much stock can be held on that result.

On paper, these teams are very similar. Both are well run organizations that rely on veterans to lead the way. The teams have the experience of having their cores winning big games together, while adding new talent to help get them to the top of the mountain again.

With that being said, Seattle has the better of the two rosters when it comes to form and pure talent. Jordan Morris, who is in the best form of his career, has seemed to be unstoppable of late. Stefan Frei is arguably one of the best goalkeepers in all of MLS, and is known for big moments. Nicolás Lodeiro has been the MVP of Seattle since he came over in 2016. Raúl Ruidíaz is arguably the best player between both squads. Not too mention players like Torres, Roldan, Kee-hee, Svensson and Smith. Seattle will need contributions from all in order to win their second Cup.

Jozy Altidore, who is questionable for MLS Cup, would add a big punch to Toronto’s lineup.

Toronto has plenty of talent of their own and like Seattle, they have been here before. Where Toronto is hurt, is the likely absence of Jozy Altidore. Their star striker was quoted saying “I’ll need a small miracle to play..”, and if that is the case they are at a disadvantage. Toronto still has Michael Bradley solidifying the midfield, but he isn’t the player he once was. Erickson Gallardo will more than likely be the forward for the team but isn’t a typical number 9 player. He is what they call a “false 9” meaning he will fall back to midfield more than he will play forward like Ruidíaz. He is great at creating opportunities but will have a struggle getting past Seattle’s backline. Alejandro Pozuelo, who has taken over for Sebastian Giovinco, is a star in the making and will be key for them in the matchup. He and Bradley will have to hold down the middle of the pitch.

Prediction:

70,000 plus will be inside CenturyLink field when these two teams clash. It will more than likely be the most attended sporting event in the stadium’s history and the second-largest crowd for an MLS Cup Final. Those fans will be expecting a win, but will they get it from their home team?

Both teams are coming off runs that very few outside of their own fanbases saw coming. Both teams have been in big matches before. Both teams have great coaching and stars that can make a difference in the matter of a second.

One team has an advantage though.

Seattle will be at home in front of a crowd that has never been seen before in the Pacific Northwest. They have the motivation of the 2017 loss to this same Toronto team and a roster that is healthier and in better overall form.

The Sounders will win this match, it will not come easily by any means though. The two clubs will feel each other out for much of the opening 45, with few great chances coming early. When the second half comes around, Seattle’s home-field advantage will be more prevalent. With the crowd behind them, the Sounders will score two second-half goals to win. Securing their second MLS Cup title in front of 70,000 Seattleites.
