Blazers drop tough home loss to Spurs, 125-104

by Kevin Nesgoda January 18, 2021
written by Kevin Nesgoda

A noon tip-off on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day saw the Blazers host the Spurs without two key starters (CJ McCollum and Jusuf Nurkic), and San Antonio took full advantage. The game was was closer than the final 125-104 scoreline indicated, but Dame’s 35 and Hood’s 21 just weren’t enough to stop lights-out shooting from the Spurs.

Lineups

Portland: Damian Lillard, Rodney Hood, Robert Covington, Derrick Jones Jr., Enes Kanter

San Antonio: Dejounte Murray, Lonnie Walker IV, DeMar DeRozan, Keldon Johnson, LaMarcus Aldridge

Game Recap

First Quarter

Rodney Hood came out hot in his starting spot—replacing CJ McCollum, who is out for a week or so with a sprained foot. Hood had seven points halfway through the quarter.

LaMarcus Aldridge made four of his first six shots in his return to Portland, but he wasn’t the only former Blazer on the court for the Spurs. Patty Mills checked in and hit a three to start his day.

It’s hard not to think about how much fun a Dame-and-Aldridge-centric offense could have been with a scorer like DeMar DeRozan on the court, too. His high screens let the Spurs get downhill speed going into the lane.

Near the end of the quarter, Dame had a hard foul goin to the rim and came up clutching his shoulder in pain. Jakob Poeltl sort of fell on Dame on his way down, but the letter 0 shook it off and continued to play, attacking and getting fouled by Poeltl on the next possession.

With the Spurs clicking on offense (61% shooting, DeRozan and Aldridge both with eight points), Gregg Popovich’s guys took a 32-28 lead to end the first.

Second Quarter

The game got scrappy to start the second, and San Antonio’s guards were creating and hitting shots. Harry Giles had a diving offensive rebound that Carmelo Anthony converted into a smooth three.

Dame was named Western Conference Player of the Week during the second, while he and the starters quelled a Spurs lead halfway through the quarter.

A pair of bad calls going the Spurs’ way helped them claim a 59-54 lead at the half, aided by their 58% shooting (including 7/13 from deep).

Third Quarter

The best highlight of the third quarter was Enes Kanter passing the ball straight out of bounds with zero pressure after a defensive board, reminding us that even the simplest tasks in life can be difficult.

The Spurs took a 10-point lead four minutes in, but Hood immediately responded with a CJ-esque fadeaway and-one.

DJJ stepped up big in the third quarter with a flying block on LMA, an and-one putback, and a highlight-tape dunk.

— Portland Trail Blazers (@trailblazers) January 18, 2021

A quick six points from Dame cut the lead to three before RoCo picked up his fourth foul with four minutes left in the third quarter.

Melo’s pull-up jumper gave the Blazers a two-point lead with just over two minutes remaining, but the Spurs retained it promptly and took a five-point lead into the final period.

Fourth Quarter

The Spurs opened up a 13-point lead to start the fourth behind an 8-0 run. Rodney, Anfernee Simons, and Melo hit consecutive threes to break the run, but Patty Mills hit another trey (hit fifth of the night from seven attempts) to keep the lead in double-digits.

With nine minutes left, the score was 98-91 Spurs. Two and a half minutes later, Terry Stotts called a timeout with the score at 108-91. The lead was built by missed Lillard drives, missed rotation threes, and Rudy Gay hitting shots.

Not even an eight-point Lillard spurt could keep the Blazers in it. Gay and Murray essentially killed the game with back-to-back threes to make it 116-99.

Final Thoughts

This was classic midseason Blazers. There are excuses—CJ and Nurk are out, of course—but this was still a game the Blazers could have won. The bench suffered without Rodney, and 20-plus points from four different Spurs (DeRozan, Aldridge, Mills, and Poeltl) is a recipe for disaster.

This is no time for excuses, though. We need to win, especially with key Western Conference opponents coming up (Grizzlies x2, Thunder, and Rockets) in the rest of January.

Player(s) of the Game

Rodney Hood stepped up into his starting role with 21 points on 9/14 shooting; while Carmelo Anthony had a solid bench performance, with 14 points and 2/3 from behind the arc.

Next Up

The Blazers will play their first of two games against the Memphis Grizzlies Wednesday night at 7pm PT.

NBA, Blazers to Return in Late July

by Kevin Nesgoda June 3, 2020
written by Kevin Nesgoda

It was reported today that the NBA is going to be returning on July 31st for a quick eight game regular season finish and then going into the playoffs with the NBA Finals wrapping up in early October.

All current NBA playoff teams are going to be invited to finish the season at Walt DisneyWorld in Orlando, Florida. Joining the playoff teams is going to be the Portland Trail Blazers, Sacramento Kings, New Orleans Pelicans, San Antonio Spurs, and the Washington Wizards.

When the season was postponed back in early March the Blazers were only 3.5 games behind the Memphis Grizzlies for the eighth and final spot in the Western Conference.

There will be a potential play in game to the playoffs if the 9th seed is within four games of the 8th seed.

The Blazers should be a much healthier team when they resume camp in Orlando. Zach Collins was on the verge of returning in March and it was predicted that Jusuf Nurkic would see some game time in April. Both men have had a bit more time to heal and should be part of some much needed depth the Blazers lack in the front court. After Carmelo Anthony and Hassan Whiteside went to the bench things got dicey for the Blazers at that point and you never knew what you were going to get on any given night.

It will be great to see Damian Lillard out on the court again, along with CJ McCollum and Gary Trent Jr. who was really starting to find his feet in the league.

The League and Players Association are expected to finalize all of this tomorrow in a formal vote.

Blazers outshoot Spurs in the fourth, win 125-117

by Kevin Nesgoda February 6, 2020
written by Kevin Nesgoda
Carmelo-Anthony-scaled.jpeg

After that beatdown on Tuesday night to the Denver Nuggets, the Blazers have returned home to play the San Antonio Spurs. The two teams haven’t played in a couple months and they had a good couple of matchups in San Antonio. It looked like each team was going to blow out the other team in each contest, but somehow, the game was not decided until the final minute of the game.

The Blazers ended up being quiet on the trade front. There was a rumor that a Karl-Anthony Towns and Jusuf Nurkic deal might have been in the works, but you know how rumors are. The Blazers only ended up moving Skal Labissiere to the Hawks for cash. This signals to me that both Nurk and Zach Collins are close to being back for the Blazers.

In the first five minutes of the game, only Trevor Ariza was the sole starter to not score a point. He had a few good looks, but the shots were short each time. CJ McCollum came out strong and had seven early points. The last couple of games I wished he had started out stronger to take some pressure off Damian Lillard and Hassan Whiteside.

That Dame and Whiteside two-man game is getting better week after week. I’m hoping Whiteside comes back next season on a reasonable deal to either start for Nurk or come off the bench or maybe start them together.

LaMarcus Aldridge is going to be a huge issue tonight. He usually is against Portland. He has made a few threes and coming up with big rebounds and feeding other guys making threes. This gets the Spurs an eight-point lead at the end of the first quarter, 35-27.

The Blazers have not had very good ball movement so far in the game and they are not covering the three very well at all. The best pass of the game so far has been when Carmelo Anthony attacked the basket, got double-teamed, and found CJ in the corner for a wide-open three. There have been other times when they could have made a pass, but instead tried to force a shot or were late on the pass.

The Blazers’ shots are close to going in. Can’t count how many shots have been halfway down in the first 14 minutes of the game and only to pop back out.

San Antonio is really moving the ball well and Portland is having trouble tracking it. Portland seems flat and they shouldn’t. The starters haven’t played in almost 48 hours.

It might be safe to say that Gary Trent Jr. has passed Anfernee Simons as the Blazers’ best bench player. I type that and half a second later Simons hits a gorgeous step-back three. CJ then adds a basket and the Blazers are only down, 41-39 now. It seems to be a thing between these teams to not quiet blow the other one out.

I know a lot of people aren’t big fans of Caleb Swanigan, but I love his hustle. He’s pure basketball chaos.

Mario Hezonja is getting minutes tonight over Nassir Little and I don’t like this move. Mario has been a net negative on both sides of the ball this year and Little has been improving in big strides the last couple of weeks. Little needs these minutes in big spots as the playoffs come around and also for next year. I love Mario, but he has lost a lot of confidence. Portland needs to send him down to the YMCA 50 and older league to run down some Portland gym rats and get that confidence back.

Oh, I forgot about the ankle sprain for Little. That will explain it.

The Blazers have been doing a good job on DeMar DeRozan tonight. He’s about the only Spur the Blazers are guarding well. Trey Lyles has four of five from three tonight and that’s all you need to know about the Blazers defensive effort tonight.

Trevor Ariza gets a layup with a few seconds left in the half and the Blazers are down 60-59 going into the break.

Into the third quarter, the Blazers are 7-22 from three and the Spurs are 9-18. The Spurs are closing out hard on pretty much all of the Blazers’ three-point shooters. When Dame goes to shoot a three LMA or Lyles is out there in his face and forcing him into tougher shots. Stotts needs to runs some sets that gets the lankier guys away from Dame on his shot. Let him pull up on Dejounte Murray or Patty Mills. Force the better matchups.

The third has been such a back and forth match up. There have been combined 27 ties and lead changes so far. The defensive effort has gone away and the teams are just scoring back to back on each other.

The Blazers bench had a great first half and they only have two points off a Swanigan layup.

DeRozan has also picked it up and now has eighteen points. The Spurs push their lead up to six, 92-86 after three. Blazers had a hard time scoring at the end of the quarter. They didn’t look confident at all on the offensive end. Dame couldn’t get free looks, but his passes to open teammates were off.

A Melo three and a CJ three-point play and the Blazers are right back in this thing. Caleb Swanigan hits a nice 17 footer and the Blazers are down a bucket. Patty Mills and Derrick White are working to keep the Blazers at bay, but Gary Trent Jr. knocks down another three to give the Blazers their first lead in a while.

Carmelo Anthony had been shooting long most of the game, he made the adjustment and the ball is not even hitting the rim right now. It’s finding the bottom of the net. And man, what can you say about Trent. He’s been hot lately.

Lillard hits a big three that pushes the Blazers lead to six, forcing Gregg Popovich to call a timeout. Moda is loud and loving the game. I could watch these two teams play all year. It’d be hard for this to end up being a seven-game series in April, but I’d be all for it.

Gary Trent Jr. hits a bit three from the corner to put the Blazers up nine points. The Blazers now have two bench players in double scoring for the first time since March of 1974. Okay, it’s been sooner than that. Trent then adds a couple more threes, he has 18 on six of seven shooting from three.

Lillard 26, Whiteside had 17-23-4, CJ had 19, Trent with 18, Melo with 20 and Ant with 10.

The Blazers play Utah tomorrow night in Salt Lake.

Portland Trail Blazers finish strong in win over Spurs, 121-116

by Kevin Nesgoda November 16, 2019
written by Kevin Nesgoda
Hassan-Whiteside-against-Spurs.jpg

Tonight we come into a game with two teams that are struggling mightily. Both the Spurs and the Blazers have dropped six of their last seven games and are hanging out together at the bottom of the Western Conference. Both teams are averaging 112 points per contest coming into tonight and both are ranked near the bottom of the league in defense.

The Blazers will be without the broken dam of defense known as Carmelo Anthony tonight. Scoring has not been an issue for the Blazers this year, they have plenty of guys that can score. They needed someone more like a Kenneth Faried who can provide the rebounding and interior defense they are missing with Zach Collins out.

I’ll be doing an in-depth analysis of how Anthony integrates with Damian Lillard, CJ McCollum and the rest of the Blazers later in the road trip. I don’t want to overreact after one game. My main concern is that he takes away shots and development time away from Anfernee Simons. The Blazers need to be careful of that. Simons is part of the future and Anthony is not.

Plus, Anthony and Nassir Little play the same position. More development minutes gone. Just sayin’.

Portland Trail Blazers start out hot, yet again.

Once again the Blazers start out hot. Hassan Whiteside is active early abusing Trey Lyles and LaMarcus Aldridge for a quick eight points and some turnovers forced. I really do think Whiteside needs to be a bigger part of the offense. He’s more active on defense when he sees the ball on offense. He obviously should not take anything away from Dame or CJ, but he could be a legit third option for the Blazers. I know the Blazers want to play more with pace, but if they don’t

CJ looks like he is also finding his groove tonight as well. He’s made two quick three-pointers and hit a long two early. The three he missed early was only off by a little bit. His eight points and five assists are a great sign early.

The Spurs can’t handle the Blazers in a one on one situation so they switch to zone and give up two quick threes to Simons and Mario Hezonja. Blazes finish the quarter on an 18-4 run and are up 41-23.

This is an exciting start, but the Blazers have not really been able to blow out any team so far this year. They have had big leads and have lost big leads. They were up 19 against the Spurs a couple of weeks ago and a quarter later were down 19.

And in the second quarter, the Blazers extended the lead to 24 points, but then the Spurs start chipping it down. The combination of Patty Mills and Jakob Poeltl started the charge. Rudy Gay and DeMar DeRozan got into the mix too. There Blazers are just unable to get stops and put teams away. Again, Anthony is not going to help with this. I just know I’m upsetting all the Carmelo stans out there right now.

Gregg Popovich changes the Spurs offense and spreads the floor out. Running lots of back and cross cuts behind the Blazers bigs for easy buckets. So, naturally, the Blazers start following the cutters and what happens? There are wide-open threes for the Spurs to take and of course, they knock them down.

If it wasn’t for CJ being so hot they Blazers would have completely blown this 24 point lead and would be trailing the Spurs at halftime. CJ led the Blazers with 23 points in the first half. It’s really good to see McCollum clicking early. He’s had problems starting off hot during a game and then disappearing until garbage time. He came out not in the first quarter, struggled early in the second and instead of disappearing he kept attacking and got the flow going again.

The six turnovers at the half are pretty good for the Blazers, but they only forced four. That is a bit disconcerting. Dame’s shooting has continued to be a little bit on the cold side as well. He only has seven points at the half. Last time against the Spurs he had three at the half, so this isn’t too worrying.

Whiteside only had two points and zero rebounds after the first eight minutes of the game. Nassir Little knocked down a three. Loving the confidence from the rookie early in the game. He crashes the boards on almost all shot attempts, even when he doesn’t have a chance at the rebound. On the defensive side, I’d love for him to sneak out more and get some easy dunks. He can outrun and out jump most of the other guys on the floor.

Hezonja had a solid first half as well. His defense was meh, but he was consistent on offense.

Pop is going with Poeltl over Lyles to start the second half. This is a smart move by Pop. Poeltl was a beast on the boards and basically outhustled everyone. Rodney Hood starts off white-hot in the third and gets a quick seven points on a three, a cut, and a gorgeous post-move.

Lillard finally got a call on a three-point shot. It wasn’t much of a foul and probably should not have been called. This leads to Gregg Popovich getting ejected. Now the Spurs are going to be coached by either Tim Duncan or Becky Hammon for the rest of the game.

The Spurs will not go away. The Blazers have been hot to start third, not as hot as Pop, but DeRozan has found himself after only scoring two points in the first half. Aldridge found his groove against Whiteside and it involved facing him up from fifteen plus feet. Not exactly where Whiteside excels defensively.

It doesn’t matter who is guarding any of the Spurs right now. They are attacking the paint, getting to the line, and picking off inbound passes. They have outscored the Blazers 40-24 in the third quarter so far and now have a four-point lead. The Blazers all out of sorts on the floor at the moment. This is to be expected with this team. They don’t have anyone who can lockdown any other player on the floor. When the defense gets out of sorts they don’t have that defensive coach on the floor who can get players right.

Terry Stotts might need to look at a new defensive coach.

It also should go out to say that the Spurs took it up a notch on their defensive end in the third quarter too. They had three blocks, forced three turnovers, and outrebounded the Blazers by eight in the quarter. They finished the third on a 30-11 run after Pop got sent to the back for a drink.

To illustrate how badly the second half is going for the Blazers, during a four-on-one break led by Hezonja, it ends with the Blazers losing a jump ball. I don’t even know with this team. Their starters aren’t great defensively outside of Whiteside and then the bench might be the worst defensive unit in all of the league. Don’t quote me on that. I’ll run the numbers after the night wraps up.

The Blazers shot 73% in the first quarter and we knew that was going to fall as the game ran on. As of writing this the Blazers have missed their last 10 shots from the field and are now shooting 45% as a team. They are down by thirteen. The Spurs have scored 35 in the second and 38 in the third. Let’s see if they can get 40 in the fourth.

Spurs have done a great job extending out on Lillard in this game. They are forcing him to pass or to shoot from other spots on the floor. They will not let him get going from beyond the arc tonight. I love him attacking the paint and throwing up lobs to Whiteside. That is high percentage offense. Whiteside followed up that lob with a nice spinning hook in the middle of the paint.

Lillard is 1-8 from three and has had at least three blocks on layup attempts so far this game.

A big dunk by Little gets the Blazers within two, 109-111. On the other end, Whiteside blocks a reverse layup by DeRozan and then Little jumps way above everyone else for a rebound. This leads to CJ hitting a floater to tie the game up at 111. Whiteside and Little with their defense and hustle have been pulling the Blazers back into it in the fourth quarter. Whiteside has that one block on DeRozan but has changed three other shots and Little has been in on nearly every loose ball in the fourth.

A Rodney Hood cut, stop, and shot drops and he sinks a free throw to give the Blazers a three-point lead with just over a minute left in the game. Some free throws by Whiteside and Lillard iced the game. The Blazers took and held on to the lead by finishing out on a 27-7 run.

DeRozan had a good look at a three down five with about 20 seconds left and he decided to take it to the rim instead. For as good of a shooter as DeRozan is, it’s amazing to me he’s never developed a three.

CJ had 32 points and 7 assists, Dame had 22, 6, and 6, while Whiteside 21 and 12.

Random Thoughts

  • I need to go to San Antonio one day. Austin was a cool town, heard good things about SA.
  • During the halftime show, a bunch of Zumba class women performed at halftime. A lot of them were older and I admire their confidence for getting out there and performing like that. It was quite endearing.
  • Becky Hammon will be the first female head coach in the NBA.
  • I think Hammon was a bit slow on bringing Patty Mills into the game in the fourth. Blazes got some momentum and Mills sat. Mills has been a Blazer killer. Not complaining. Just an observation.

Next Up

The Blazers have Sunday off as they head up the road to Houston. The game is at 7:00 PM on NBATV.

Blazers almost complete amazing comeback, fall to Spurs, 113-110

by Kevin Nesgoda October 28, 2019
written by Kevin Nesgoda
Kent-Bazemore-blocks-Dejounte-Murray.png

The Blazers were in San Antonio tonight looking to get their third win of the season in San Antonio and early on things looked promising as the Blazers jumped out to a 23-4 lead. From there the legs got tired and the Spurs behind DeMar DeRozan and Bryn Forbes defeated the Blazers, 113-110

You could not ask for much more from the Blazers in the first quarter from the Blazers. CJ McCollum continued his hot streak, Rodney Hood had a nice start, and Kent Bazemore comes in playing lights out defense. Baze had some highlight-reel chase-down blocks. One came on a much faster Dejounte Murray early in the 2nd. I’m still not sure how he caught him. He turned on a gear I didn’t know he had. The second came when he chased down a LaMarcus Aldridge turn around jumper on the low block. Baze was on the opposite side of the floor at the top or arch when Aldridge caught the ball.

The Spurs started chipping at the lead through the second quarter. The Blazers started missing shots and DeRozan started making them. The Spurs cut the lead to six at half time. Ending the quarter on a heat streak. It continued in the third with the Spurs outscoring the Blazers by 17, 37-20

Damian Lillard shooting a Westbrookian 3-19 from the field through the first three quarters did not help matters.

Behind some hot shoot by Patty Mills the Spurs pushed the lead to 19 points with about five minutes left to go. Then Lillard started clicking and the Blazers went on a 20-2 run, cutting the lead down to one with just over a minute to go.

He's unreal. pic.twitter.com/jkTMdUlJB7

— Portland Trail Blazers (@trailblazers) October 29, 2019

The Spurs pushed it back up to five points with 47 seconds left after a soft shot by Derrick White and a couple of free throws by LaMarcus Aldridge. The Blazers had a couple of chances to tie the game with under 20 seconds to go, but Dame and Anthony Tolliver both missed three-pointers.

The door was not closed though.

DeRozan was fouled with 7.8 seconds left and missed both free throws. The Spurs led 113-110 and Portland had one more chance to tie the game. Lillard got a great look at the shot and the ball was three-quarters of the way down and it bounced out. I’m not sure how that didn’t stay down.

Lillard scored the last 18 points for the Blazers to end the game. He finished with 28, 9, and 7 tonight. He only had one turnover tonight.

CJ finished with 27, Hood had 11, Simons and Skal Labissiere each had 10.

Random thoughts

Anfernee Simons to give the Blazers really good minutes at both backcourt positions. I’d like to see him be a bit more of a facilitator, but the kid can score.

The Blazers missed Zach Collins tonight.

I thought that Terry Stotts would pull the starters out down by 19 with just over five minutes left. The Blazers almost made a great comeback. This is why he is a head coach in the NBA and we sit at home and write about it. Terry Stotts plays to win the game!

No double-double tonight for Hassan Whiteside. He seemed a step off tonight. He played a lot the night before.

The Blazers lost that lead tonight because they were tired and just stopped playing when they got up 19. You could tell the Spurs were the fresher team. Once the Spurs got up 19 they started to play tight and didn’t close out. But you just can’t rule out Damian Lillard on any night though. He might be on an MVP season right now.

Next up

The Blazers have Tuesday off before they head up to Oklahoma City to finish up their road trip.

Blazers @ Spurs Preview

by Kevin Nesgoda October 28, 2019
written by Kevin Nesgoda
blazersvsspurs.jpg

The Portland Trail Blazers (2-1) will head to San Antonio to face the Spurs (2-0) on the second night of a Texas-sized back-to-back. Last night, the Blazers pulled off a thrilling comeback victory against Luka Doncic and the Dallas Mavericks. The Blazers will be without starting big man Zach Collins after he separated his left shoulder in the third quarter. Although Collins’ timetable is still up in the air going forward, but he is definitely out for tonight.

Zach’s injury leaves a gaping hole in an already-thin rotation of Blazers bigs: Jusuf Nurkic is out for probably half the season and Pau Gasol still isn’t healthy. That leaves Hassan Whiteside and Skal Labissiere as the Blazers’ only remaining pure bigs. Mario Hezonja was forced to play center against Kristaps Porzingis down the stretch after Whiteside fouled out, so he’s my best bet to take Zach’s starting spot.

https://twitter.com/mariohezonja/status/1188644055623917569?s=20

Expected Starting Lineups:

  • Portland: Damian Lillard, CJ McCollum, Rodney Hood, Mario Hezonja, Hassan Whiteside
  • San Antonio: Dejounte Murray, Bryn Forbes, DeMar DeRozan, LaMarcus Aldridge, Trey Lyles

Portland got huge offensive contributions from their backcourt last night (Dame had 30 points; Cj 28) but it was the second-half defense that turned the game around. Dallas scored 71 in the first half and only 48 in the second.

The Spurs are rounding out a third game of their opening homestand, most recently defeating the Washington Wizards 124-122 in their last game behind a game-winning bucket from DeMar DeRozan, who went 5-for-6 in the final quarter.

San Antonio are six-point favorites. They have beaten the Knicks and Wizards so far, but this will be their first true test against a Western Conference opponent.

Game Info

  • Time: Monday, Oct. 28th at 5:30 p.m. PT
  • Place: AT&T Center in San Antonio, Texas
  • How to watch: NBCSNW (click here for legal streaming options)

Quick Stats

  • Portland leads the league in two-pointers made through three games with 100
  • LaMarcus Aldridge is beginning his fifth season with the Spurs after nine years in Portland
  • Portland and San Antonio split their season series last year
