Vancouver Whitecaps announced this morning that Peruvian international center forward, Yordy Reyna, has been transferred to DC United for a fee of $400k and an international spot.

Reyna, who came to Vancouver from Austrian giants RB Salzburg for $900k back in 2017, was the longest tenured player on the squad. The Whitecaps acquired the $400k in GAM (General Allocation Money) which brings their total transfer earnings $3.1 million. They only got half of his current value due to the current nature of the transfer market and his status on the team. There is an additional clause in the transfer that, if Reyna is sold before the end of the 2021 season, the Whitecaps will earn an undisclosed percentage of the sale.

This move seems to be the best for both parties as it appeared that Reyna had fallen out of favor with MDS. Reyna, who has made 65 starts and 86 appearances across all competitions for Whitecaps FC, registering 21 goals and 17 assists in that time. Including this cracker of a goal against FC Dallas last year…

The Venuto goal was more important for #VWFC. But the Yordy Reyna strike was a thing of beauty! pic.twitter.com/qDZzwZVPuT

Reyna has all the ability in the world. His downfall was his consistency and work rate. If he can sort these out, then he can still be an asset for DC United.

Whitecaps CEO Axel Schuster’s statement regarding the transfer,

“We thank Yordy for his four years with the club,” said Axel Schuster, Whitecaps FC CEO and Sporting Director. “We’re pleased we were able to arrange a deal that is best for both the club as well as Yordy. The Allocation Money we’re getting in return will help us add quality to our roster next season, while Yordy gets a good opportunity for a fresh start. We wish him the best at D.C. United.”

The interesting thing to note here is Schuster’s statement regarding the team in this. He says to help add quality to the squad next year… NEXT YEAR?! They have still yet to use the In-Beom money from earlier this season. They also have two international spots and a DP spot wide open. Based on previous statements and the one above, we will not be seeing any new faces for the remainder of the season. I truly believe that will not be favorable for the team, but MDS and the Whitecaps may just prove me wrong.
