Blazers fall to Luka Doncic, Dallas Mavericks, 120-112

The Blazers are coming off their best win of the season, a 10-point road victory over the trigger-happy Houston Rockets on Wednesday night in which they held MVP frontrunner James Harden to 13 points (he is averaging a league-high 37.2 on the season).

Damian Lillard is questionable coming into Friday’s matchup at Dallas due to “upper respiratory illness” (fancy medical terms for the flu). I’d expect Terry Stotts to start Anfernee Simons in Dame’s place if he’s not ready to go, pushing Mario Hezonja into an expanded point-forward role in the second rotation.

Well, turns out he is good to go, so we won’t even have to worry about that.

At least Kristaps Porzingis is out for the Mavs, who come in winning their last three games (Sixers, @ Kings, @ Warriors).

Luka Doncic has been phenomenal since returning from injury after Christmas, posting a scorching stat-line of 27.8 points, 9.3 assists, and 10.2 rebounds per game. He’s putting together the profile of a future MVP, and number crunchers (such as the ones at FiveThirtyEight) are losing their minds over some of his performances.

The Blazers are wearing their city edition uniforms (the “Rip City” ones) tonight, as are the Mavericks (their horrendous graffiti-inspired blue ones).

One player I’m eager to watch tonight—and I can’t believe I’m saying this—is Anthony Tolliver. In his last three games, Tolliver has had 7, (a season-high) 16, and 8 points as a big bench contributor. He also added 11 rebounds in those two former games.

One guy I’m keeping an eye on for the Mavs is Maxi Kleber, who’s been suggested as a possible trade target for Portland as the trade deadline approaches. The 6-10, 240-lb German is currently averaging 9.1 points and 5.4 boards in 24.9 minutes per game this season, along with a 59.7 eFG% and 87.3 FT%.

Starting Lineups

Portland: Damian Lillard, CJ McCollum, Kent Bazemore, Carmelo Anthony, Hassan Whiteside

Dallas: Luka Doncic, Tim Hardaway Jr., Dorian Finney-Smith, Maxi Kleber, Dwight Powell

First Quarter

The Blazers jumped out to 7-0 and 14-3 leads in the first quarter behind a team effort of scoring.

Whiteside had two big blocks on Luka, but that didn’t stop the two-point guards from throwing haymakers back and forth —Doncic hit his first four threes, while Dame started 4/5 from the field and 3/3 from deep.

Melo became the 18th player in NBA history to hit 26,000 points with a free throw in the first. He’s second on the list of active all-time scoring leaders behind some dude named LeBron James.

Whiteside picked up his second personal foul with five minutes left in the quarter, but he stayed in the game temporarily.

By the second timeout of the quarter, Portland had allowed Dallas to take the lead back through careless fouls, including two defensive three seconds calls.

Portland’s offense flourished early. There was plenty of fluid cutting, passing(!!!) and finishing that allowed the Blazers to get to the rim for a bunch of layups.

Despite the decent defense by Portland, we still trailed 38-37 at the end of the quarter.

Second Quarter

Anthony Tolliver showed some great help defense on two straight possessions.

Kleber-watch: Big man had a smooth three from the corner in the first and a big block on Ant in the second.

Melo’s blatant off-ball offensive foul gave Dallas possession on Portland’s first turnover of the game, which Jalen Brunson punished with a three.

Unfortunately, fouls were a common first half trend for us:

https://twitter.com/chold/status/1218372494089957378

CJ left the game after hobbling off the court, going back to the locker room. He landed on Maxi Kleber’s foot pretty awkwardly.

https://twitter.com/pinwheelempire/status/1218374767222251521

Portland’s scoring slowed, but Dallas’ didn’t. All of a sudden, Jalen Brunson had 11 points, the Mavs had a 10-point lead, and Doncic was reentering the game after sitting about a whole quarter. Ugh.

Whiteside got called for offensive AND defensive three seconds in the span of, like, four possessions. All the confidence was being sucked out of the Blazers with a fancy reusable straw.

Lillard kept doing his thing, though. Dame had 25 points in the first half after passing the 14,000-point mark. Fitting, considering he was the only healthy ideal starter remaining. He was in his bag around the rim, absorbing lots of contact and still finishing on nearly every drive.

With about a minute left in the first half, ESPN’s Chauncey Billups started noticing what Blazers Twitter had been up in arms about: the refereeing. Please inject this national respect for Damian Lillard directly into my veins.

Melo had a solid first half as well, contributing a much-needed 14 points on 4/6 shooting.

Dallas’ Hardaway and Brunson were really killing Portland in the first half. Together they went 8/11 (3/3 from deep, 5/5 from the line) with24 points. Oh, also, Luka had six threes and 23 points at the break.

Third Quarter

With CJ being ruled out for the rest of the game at halftime, Portland knew they would have to lean on Dame even more than they already were, although he only had seven in the third.

https://twitter.com/folkestad3/status/1218381741238472705

Portland opened the second half with two turnovers and two missed threes before Hezonja was able to tip home a Whiteside… shot? Side note: in soccer, the term “shross” (shot/cross) is fairly common. Whatever Hassan was trying to do there can only be described as a “shob” (shot/lob).

A couple possessions later, Luka elbowed Whiteside in the face during a Eurostep that was called as a very questionable flagrant, but Whiteside missed both the free throws and the Blazers didn’t score anyway, so it evened out.

Whiteside was at the center of attention twice more:

  1. He fought hard for a great board, but then inexplicably tossed the ball to the Mavs with two or three teammates right next to him.
  2. He successfully contested a Doncic jumper but probably fouled him a bit by clanging into him afterwards. No foul was called, and Luka was asking the refs about it at the next timeout.

Dallas flirted with a double-digit lead throughout the third, with Hardaway scoring five points in two possessions to bring the lead to 13.

One thing that did go right for the Blazers was getting in the bonus with six minutes left in the quarter. Dame scored his 30th point a possession later.

Props to Bazemore for really trying to distribute the ball on offense. His buzzer-beater three cut the lead to single digits going into the fourth.

Unfortunately, Hardaway was still firing on all cylinders on the other end, scoring 15 in the third quarter alone.

Fourth Quarter

Carmelo’s jumper opened up the fourth for his 20th point and a 14-4 Portland run. The Blazers were within seven. He missed his next two shots, though, and Stotts called time after Dallas took an 11-point lead.

At the start of the quarter, Portland’s offensive gameplan was pretty clear: get the ball to Melo and get out of the way. Despite this, it was Bazemore’s three from the wing that cut the lead to six with Dame still resting.

Kleber-watch II: can’t guard Melo (I mean, who can?), missed wide open layup, drained the wide open three mentioned above.

Whiteside had a strong block on defense before finishing a Dame pick-and-roll with a spinning hook in the lane, bringing the Blazers within four at the 7:15 mark.

His chemistry with Lillard wasn’t done; he finished a great pass out of a double-team from Dame.

Two nitpicky fouls in one possession from Tolliver on Doncic followed.

Weirdess ensued on the other end, as Whiteside fouled Kleber on a rebound attempt. It was initially ruled as a common foul and Kleber made the most of it, but the call of a loose ball foul was upheld, bringing delight to Blazer fans everywhere (and Chauncey). It did put Dallas in the bonus, though, and Kleber’s second foul shot made the lead seven again.

Tolliver matched Seth Curry‘s three, but the former Blazer’s floater and 16th point kept a five-point cushion intact with four minutes left.

Both teams kept scoring. With Melo ready to check back in, Whiteside met Hardaway at the rim but was called for a very iffy foul. Stotts challenged it…successfully! The jumpball was won by Whiteside.

All of a sudden, neither team could score, despite bonehead turnovers by each side. Hardaway finally missed a shot, but Doncic scored on back-to-back possessions to ice the game. Welp.

In the end, Luka went 8/12 from behind the arc and and scored 35 points. Dallas covered the 7.5-point spread to bury what was truly a valiant effort by the Blazers.

Final Thoughts

Well, that was kinda fun, albeit stressful and disappointing. My conclusions from this game are as follows:

  • Luka’s gonna win MVP. Soon. If the Beard and Freak cool off, maybe it’s this season.
  • Dallas is legit. They’re kinda built like the Rockets sometimes, where they space the floor and let Luka do his thing. I think that’d be fun to see in the playoffs.
  • The Blazers really really really really really really really need CJ to be OK.

Blazers break five-game losing streak as they beat the Washington Wizards, 122-103

Carmelo-Anthony-scaled.jpeg

The Portland Trail Blazers came into the Nation’s Capital looking to break their five-game losing streak. Coming into the matchup the Blazers have the better talent in the starting lineup. The Washington Wizards are started Isaiah Thomas and Gary Payton II in their starting line up.

The Blazers allegedly worked on their defense all day in practice yesterday. This is the first time all season that I’ve heard that the Blazers have worked on their defense. I’m sure they have at various points in practice, but this is the first time it seems like they have focused on it.

Tonight was the night they did break the streak, beating the Wizards, 122-103.

Thomas ejected less than a minute and a half into the game for shoving an official. The Wizards needed him to be able to keep up with the Blazers guards in scoring tonight. Ish Smith is going to have to play 45 minutes tonight for the Wizards at point guard. This is great news for both Damian Lillard, CJ McCollum, and Carmelo Anthony. The Wizards switch on the wings a lot so we can see Smith a lot on Melo during switches.

Blazers immediately go on a 7-0 after the ejection.

Whiteside and Melo are eating up the Wizards off the switches. Both men have a combined 12 points and 9 rebounds through the initial six minutes of the first quarter. CJ McCollum has been taking Gary Payton II to the rim a lot lately. Payton has 16 steals over his last four games and has looked a lot like his dad on defense. CJ is making him look like Steve Scheffler.

I type that and Payton gets his first steal of the game. Stole a bad pass from Anfernee Simons.

The Blazers defense has not improved much from their focus yesterday. They somehow gave up 31 points in the first quarter with the Wizards three best guards not playing. As predicted on Twitter, Ish Smith is going to be a handful tonight.

Mario Hezonja is attacking hard tonight. He has seven points in five minutes of action so far tonight. He’s really attacking the basket and finding teammates as well. He’s also playing solid defense tonight as well. Bazemore strokes a three and the Blazers take their first lead in a while, 44-41 halfway through the second.

Carmelo is getting a lot of love on the road. He should be on the All-Star team this year. Who knows how much longer he actually has left. He looks like he could play at least another two years after this. This is back to back games he’s gotten cheered every time he’s checked in or touched the ball.

The Blazers actually closed out a half strongly and held a 66-58 lead going into the break.

I’ve decided the Blazers need to trade for Ish Smith, yes it might stunt the development of Anfernee Simons, but he could be a good coach for the second unit too.

Damian Lillard and CJ Mc Collum came out hot in the third quarter and helped the Blazers push their lead out to 16 points. Both guys were aggressive and attacked everyone on the court. Mario Hezonja has also been a blessing tonight. The Blazers bench would be individually outscored by four bench players on the Wizards bench if not for him.

The Wizards cut the lead down to six points in the fourth quarter. Jordan McCrae has been wicked hot all night for the Wizards. He has that ability to score a lot of points in a hurry, his only issue is that he doesn’t do it very often. Tonight was one of those nights that he was knocking down everything.

Damian Lillard was more than up to matching the challenge. Every time McCrae hit a big shot, Dame would come back and match him in some form.

Carmelo Anthony hit a three from the corner to push the lead back up to 16, 113-97.

Lillard had 35 to lead the Blazers, CJ added 24, Whiteside had 23-21-5, Melo had 16.

The Blazers head to Miami on Sunday for a 3:00 PM tip.

Portland Trail Blazers blown out again by the Denver Nuggets, 114-99

by Kevin Nesgoda December 12, 2019
written by Kevin Nesgoda
Terry-Stotts-e1572934604494.jpg

The budding rivalry is once again renewed tonight between the injury-riddled Portland Trail Blazers and the knicked up Denver Nuggets. The Blazers are coming off giving an ass whipping to the New York Knicks and the Nuggets are losers of three in a row.

Though the rivalry might have been short-lived as the Nuggets behind a big night from Jerami Grant blew out the Blazers, 114-99.

The Blazers needed to get off to a hot start tonight and boy have they. Hassan Whiteside has 11 points and a three pointer made already in the first six minutes of the game and Carmelo Anthony put in a quick five points as well.

The Nuggets are making a three every minute to start the game. It’s good to see that the Blazers have not shored up the perimeter defense hasn’t improved at all with Kent Bazemore getting starter minutes. But he can’t guard the entire length of the three point line all by himself. Nikola Jokic is bruising up the Blazers on the interior too. Terry Stotts decides to play both Whitside and Skal Labissiere at the same time. Jokic has killed them inside and outside since they’ve both been on the floor.

CJ McCollum goes to the bench and both Anfernee Simons and Gary Trent Jr. join Damian Lillard in the backcourt to end the quarter. The Blazers might want to take a look at Jamal Crawford and play him a few minutes a game. At least Jusuf Nurkic is close to coming back.

The Blazers end the first quarter down 33-25. A lot of great effort to start the quarter, but the lack of depth really showed as it went on. Portland doesn’t have anyone like Jerami Grant to come off the bench to play all three areas of the floor.

The Nuggets start the 2nd on a 10-2 run, Michael Porter Jr. took offense to Melo destroying him on the block by knocking down a couple of three point shots.

Blazers take a much needed time out and come back on fire. A couple of threes by CJ and some attacks by Melo and the Blazers go on a 10-2 run themselves to get back within seven points again. Carmelo had a gorgeous steal of a Porter pass that he took coast to coast for a layup.

Stotts decides to take Anthony out when the Blazers cut the Nuggets lead down to three and a few seconds later the lead is back to eight. Lillard is ice cold right now. He’s 0-5 from three and he’s forcing things. The offense in the second half should flow through Whiteside and Antony in the second half. The Blazers trail at the half by 9, 62-53.

The Blazers came out hot to start the third quarter and have upped the defensive intensity. Damian Lillard started to come life too. He was scoring and getting the ball to both Whiteside and Melo in the right spots.

I”m not sure what it is tonight, but CJ looks slow and maybe disinterested. His body language is terrible. It’s usually lax, but not like this. I wonder if he has a nagging injury or is part of that nasty flu bug that is going around. Or maybe he’s just over it.

Whiteside has been playing killer defense on Jokic tonight too. So far he’s held him to 13 points three quarters the way through the third. Yes, Jokic is having a down year. His offensive game is also on point tonight.

Tory Craig played some of the best defense I have seen all year on Damian Lillard and Dame casually knocks down a three over him. That’s a will breaking shot.

The Nuggets have 13 threes made so far tonight. The Blazers really need to challenge those shots better. It’d be one thing if they were contested threes, but for the most part, they are wide open. The shots are just killers too. Blazes cut the lead to one point, they give up three threes in the final minute of the quarter and they are down 11 heading into the fourth.

The third is a quarter they should have won. They had the Nuggets on their heels for most of the quarter and had a chance to take the lead going into the fourth. The Blazers defense stepped up big and had the Nuggets all out of sorts on offense to start the third. Then the Denver bench knocked down some big shots in the final minute.

The Nuggets bench has outscored the Blazers bench 35-7 through three quarters.

The fourth quarter did not start much better. The Nuggets pushed the lead out to 17 in the first few minutes. For some reason, they have decided to not guard Jerami Grant. He’s just leading the team in scoring. No reason to guard the guy who hasn’t missed a three tonight and is shooting 70% from the field.

Tonight it seems that only Hassan Whiteside and Carmelo Anthony gave a damn. Whiteside had a career-high in points with 33 and Carmelo chipped in 20.

The Nuggets bench outscored the Blazers bench 46-9.

Next Up

The Blazers get three days off before heading to Phoenix to take on the Suns. Tip is at 6:00 PM.

Carmelo Anthony and the Blazers destroy Chicago Bulls, 117-94

by Kevin Nesgoda November 25, 2019
written by Kevin Nesgoda
ezgif.com-webp-to-png.png

So tonight could be an interesting night. The Portland Trail Blazers are in Chicago to take on the Bulls and I’m in Santa Barbara watching a fire come down the mountain toward my house. So if the recap seems a little bit choppier than normal, it’s because of the fire and the helicopters floating around above me.

Tonight is nice for the Blazers as they get to play ten of the next fourteen at home after tonight. They’ve only had five games at home and it’s almost December.

The ball is moving around nicely for the Blazers tonight already. The team came into the night 29th in the league in assists and 30th in rebounding. Through the first ten minutes, they have eight assists and have outrebounded 13-11.

Rodney Hood started out on fire scoring on two long jumpers and then… Carmelo Anthony started to take over. Melo chipped in 12 points in the first quarter. It’s the best Melo has looked in years. Maybe he’s starting to get his sea legs under him.

Skal Labissiere continues to play well too. He had six points and four boards in the first quarter. Damian Lillard also looked spry. Hoping that back injury is starting to subside. Zach LaVine is continuing his hot shooting tonight too. For a Blazers team that is in the bottom four in defending the three that is not a good sign.

My god the Blazers are moving the ball around tonight. The ISO Play is low tonight and the Blazers are just whipping the ball around. They are finding open shooters and open cutters. The Bulls are not ready for this Blazers team. Carmelo is passing up open threes for better shots from guys like Anfernee Simons and Hassan Whiteside. The Bulls are not a good team, but I am really digging the energy from the Blazers tonight.

The Blazers jumped out to a 50-37 lead and of course, this is when they decide to hover around the paint and give up a quick 9-0 run on back to back threes from Lauri Markkanen and Denzel Valentine (forgot he was even in the league) and then Markkanen gets a three point play the hard way.

Some love is thrown out to Hersey Hawkins, a Chicago native and Blazer coach, thrown out during the break.

Chicago is on an 11-0 to cut the lead down to two. Once again the Blazers can’t put their foot on the throat of another team. I’d like to say the Bulls are an inferior opponent. They were last year. They seem to be pretty even this year and that should not be the case.

Coby White is bullying CJ McCollum tonight. It reminds of when Gary Payton would back a weaker guard into the paint and abuse them in the post. Sad thing is, CJ is bigger than White. This should not be happening. At least he has 13 points to go with the 17 he’s given up on the defensive end.

Lillard and CJ are clicking to start the third quarter and the Blazers push their lead back up to 13 once again. Also, Markkanen cannot guard Melo. This is a huge mismatch.

Damn, the Blazers are looking good tonight. They are looking hungry. Dame is facilitating tonight, has 11 assists halfway through the third quarter.

The Blazers really pushed it in that quarter. The Blazers have a plus 16 advantage on the boards, have five steals and have hit 20 assists tonight. The defense is on another level, they’re holding the Bulls to only 32% shooting through three. Blazers up 92-72. This is the best I’ve seen the Blazers play all year so far. A complete effort on both sides of the court.

The fourth quarter might be a different story though. I would love to see the Blazers close this out strong. No eight-point garbage time win. This needs to be 18 plus, no excuses.

The evacuation zone is now two blocks from where I live. This is getting interesting.

Carmelo is balling tonight! He got a three, a dunk, and another three. He’s up to 25 points right now. He’s also got seven boards. This is the best Melo has looked in a long time. CJ hits a three and the Blazers go up 26 in the fourth. Again, the ball is moving around quite a bit and there is very little ISO. Even when Melo does his ISO stuff he makes quick decisions instead of eating up 8-10 seconds on the clock like he had been doing the last couple of years. There have been two possession tonight where everyone touched the ball twice!

Anthony has now passed Alex English for 17th all-time in scoring.

Carmelo finishes the night with 25, CJ chipped in 21, Hood had 16, and Whiteside and Lillard each had 13 points. Lillard also had 12 assists. Skal had 12 off the bench.

LaVine led the Bulls with 18.

Random Thoughts

Wendell Carter looks like he’s been in the league for 30 years. There is no way that dude is only a second year player. He looks sixty.

Next Up

The Blazers get to sleep in their own beds for the first time in what seems like a month. They take on Oklahoma City on Wednesday night at 7:00 PM.

Portland Trail Blazers outclassed by the Toronto Raptors, 114-106

by Kevin Nesgoda November 13, 2019
written by Kevin Nesgoda
Rodney-Hood-against-Toronto-Raptors.jpeg

Tonight we’ve apparently entered the time to start a rookie to see if we can get some energy going period of the season. I thought it might be a little later in the season that we would see this, but with all the injuries and inconsistent play so far this season it is about time that Terry Stotts tried something a little different.

Tonight Nassir Little got the start over the likes of Mario Hezonja and Anthony Tolliver.

The move is definitely warranted. Stotts has been getting a whole lot of nothing from Hezonja, Tolliver, and Kent Bazemore when they graced the starting lineup this season. Anything was needed from that group. Damian Lillard is so far the only member of the team who is consistent. Yes, CJ McCollum is averaging 20 points a game so far this year, but he disappears for so many minutes at a time that when he does start scoring it doesn’t matter.

Tonight the Raptors are without Kyle Lowry, Serge Ibaka, Patrick McCaw, and OG Anunoby. The Blazers needed to show some killer instinct and not let the Raptors hang around. Pascal Siakam is a monster and an early darkhorse MVP candidate. Even without Kawhi Leonard and two other starters, half the world champs outclassed the Blazers, 116-104.

As predicted there is some energy early on from the Blazers. A lot of great effort from both Dame and Hassan Whiteside to start the game. Whiteside challenged on every board and showed some range, hitting a 16 and 19 footer in the first six minutes of the game. He also had four rebounds and changed a few shots. Loved the energy from him to start the game.

And Logo Lillard made an early appearance.

Portland Trailblazers come out strong but fail to maintain.

Blazers jumped out to an early 14-2 run. Then the bench came in and Toronto started making shots. And once again the Blazers refused to guard the three point line. Fred VanVleet, Siakam, and Terence Davis (who?) started knocking down shots threes.

I like how Nick Nurse has given Davis the green light, that kid has a smooth stroke. If he keeps shooting like that let it go, kid!

This game is not pretty and we should probably get used to that. Once the game slows down the Blazers get stagnant. It’s even worse when they go to the bench and CJ becomes the leading scorer on the floor. The best CJ led lineup without Damian Lillard is their 13th best lineup they’ve trotted out this year. With CJ and no Dame on the floor, the Blazers average 12.7 points a game.

That’s spare parts, bud.

That lineup also involved Zach Collins. You want the next best CJ lineup without Dame on the floor? It averages only 4.3 points per game.

And as the Blazers went to a lineup of CJ, Anfernee Simons, Skal Labissiere, Kent Bazemore, and Mario Hezonja (this lineup averages 2.7 points per game) the Raptors fought back and took the lead. Whiteside was hot to start the game and led the Blazers in scoring at the half. For some reason, he was on the bench for 13 game minutes in the half without an injury. Lillard also got a long rest.

Yes, this is the second night of a back-to-back, but we’re not 70 games into the season here, we’re 11. The guys should have their legs under them and they have don’t have another game until Saturday night. Terry Stotts is a head coach in the NBA and I’m not, but I’m totally second-guessing this.

It’s not as if Dame was effective in the first half either. He only had four points in 17 minutes of action. Whiteside was the only Blazer in double digits and he had ten points.

Rodney Hood scored quick eight points to start the third quarter and the Blazers got the lead back. The Raptors are now collapsing four and five guys around Whiteside on all rebounds. He was killed Marc Gasol and Siakam on box outs. it would have been nice to see other Blazers crash the boards too. They would have gotten a few easy rebounds.

Little now has seven and knocked down his first three of the game. I really think he’s going to get this starting gig until Collins has his legs back underneath him. I’d say maybe give Anfernee Simons some looks as a starter, but then they would not have any bench scoring at all.

Also, who called Hood and VanVleet having a shootout in the third quarter? No one else?

As Hood gets his 16th point of the third quarter Stotts pulls him out and the Raptors close out the quarter on a 16-3 run to take an 87-79 lead into the fourth quarter. Hood was doing a good job on Siakam defensively and then Hezonja comes in and gives up a quick seven points.

Hezonja has his moments where you think he might turn it around and then he does things to make you realize that he is in fact Mario Hezonja.

For example; Hezonja knocks down a three to start the fourth quarter, then next possession shoots a heat check three through a double team.

You know, Jamal Crawford and Kenneth Faried are at home not playing for another team right now.

CJ actually showed up in the fourth quarter on the offensive end, but in the middle of the fourth, he let VanVleet get by him for an easy basket and then threw the ball six rows deep as he tried to find Hood at the three point line.

Hood was also ice-cold coming back into the game after sitting for about 11 minutes of game time. Again, what is Stotts doing with his rotations? Hood was the only one scoring, he gets pulled during a tied game and a few minutes later the Blazers are down nine points. He comes back in the game with eight minutes left and is ice cold. When Hood is hot you leave him in. It’s like a law or something.

The Blazers tied the game at 94 and Toronto promptly goes on a 12-0 run and once again the Blazers are getting out hustled on loose balls, getting boxed out on crucial rebounds (not that Toronto missed many shots in the fourth). This team is going to break Damian Lillard‘s will.

Fred VanVleet was the best guard on the floor tonight, he had 30 points and 7 assists. Siakam scored 36 tonight.

Hood had 25 for the Blazers, CJ had 19, Simons with 17, Whiteside with 12, and Hezonja with 10. Dame only had 9 points tonight.

Random Thoughts

A lot of empty seats tonight in Moda. There are also quite a few Toronto fans. The building feels dead tonight. Even when Portland went up 14-2 the energy was lacking. Even into the second quarter, there was nothing happening.

You could tell Little was nervous. He didn’t handle the ball well early and forced some shots. He had some great effort on defense though! The track down block he had on Stanley Johnson toward the end of the second quarter was magic. Too bad Rodney Hood traveled on the fastbreak. The kid has a ton of energy. Maybe he sticks in the lineup, but knowing Stotts we’ll see Tolliver on Saturday in San Antonio.

Since the game is on League Pass, it’s good to hear Kevin Calabro on the call again. Was getting tired of those other announcers on the NBATV games.

I can’t get over how dead the building was tonight. I think the basket mic picked up someone sneezing in the bathroom.

Yes, the Blazers have some injuries are really light on the front line, but the inconsistent rotations are really hurting the Blazers this year.

Blazers head back on the road for six more first up is the San Antonio Spurs Saturday night at 5:30 pm.

Portland Trail Blazers show little effort in loss to Kings

by Kevin Nesgoda November 12, 2019
written by Kevin Nesgoda
Damian-Lillard.jpg

On Sunday evening the Blazers finally picked up a home win and broke a four-game losing streak by beating the Hawks. Tonight they looked to carry some of that momentum to Sacramento. With a win tonight the Blazers would have more wins in Sacramento than in Portland eleven games into the season.

The Kings were without both De’Aaron Fox and Marvin Bagley and you’d think that both Damian Lillard and CJ McCollum would be able to feast on a slower rotation of guards not known for the defense. And early it looked like it might be that way early on in the first quarter.

As we know that isn’t how the Blazers work this season. There is a good chance that things might not get easier for the Blazers until they make a move or Jusuf Nurkic comes back.

And the Blazers fell to a less talented (on paper) Sacramento Kings, 107-99. The Blazers are now 4-7 on the season and do not look good.

Oh boy, did this game start ugly for the Kings. They were 5-22 to start the game and the Blazers opened up a quick 16-5 lead. It should have been a lot more. The team did not take care of the what-so-ever in that the first quarter. They had eight turnovers and looked flatfooted on a lot of loose balls. They had some easy rebounds but were out-hustled by the Kings front line.

Bogdan Bogdanovic was the only player in the first quarter that seemed to do anything for the Kings. He got steals, led fastbreaks, hit threes. Hield had threw up a few airballs in the quarter.

Hassan Whiteside picked up three quick fouls and spent the rest of the first half on the bench. Skal Labissiere did not fair much better. He had two quick turnovers and was outplayed by the likes of Harry Giles and Nemanja Bjelica. Moses Brown did come in for the final four minutes of the half and gave the Blazers three nice rebounds and showed some good movement on defense. He took a really awkward looking hook shot, but that’s not his game. He was open and I like the confidence, but the kid should not be looking to score right now. Rebounds, blocks, and solid screens are what he should be looking to do. Those will get him minutes.

And the Blazers need all the big man minutes they can get right now.

The Portland Trail Blazers somehow held onto a 49-46 lead at halftime.

A lead they could not hold on to. They started off the second half having more turnovers (three) than points (two) in the first two minutes of the half. The Kings took advantage of those sloppy plays and jumped out to a 57-51 lead. behind some red hot Buddy Hield shooting and Harrison Barnes out there looking like Minkah Fitzpatrick.

Everyone not named Whiteside came out looking extra flat and disinterested. This is not the first time the team has come out to start the second half like Terry Stotts made the entire team down a bottle of sleeping pills and run uphill sprints.

I am not sure what is happening in the locker room at half time and whatever it is Stotts needs to start doing the exact opposite. The only Blazer that played worth a damn in the third was Lillard. CJ was hot in the first half and only had two points and a turnover in the quarter.

Let’s talk a bit more about CJ’s third quarter. He had a quick basket to start the quarter, but then had two bad turnovers (oh, one officially wasn’t charged to him) and fouled Buddy Hield on a three-point attempt by lazily going around a screen. He ended up right under Hield on his shot and then Heild made all three free throws.

And CJ missed two big free throws at the start of the fourth quarter.

His second-half defense appeared to be worse than usual. Every time I looked up there was another King driving by him and getting to the basket. Thankfully, Stotts decided to put in Anfernee Simons, who at least tries on defense. He’s not great at defense either, but at least he tries.

Not could be said for the rest of the Blazers. Their preferred defensive stance reminded me of Pete Carroll standing on the sidelines chewing gum as his players ran past him. And the close out on shooters, especially Bogdanovic was equally pathetic. The dude was hot and the Blazers were all like, “Nah, he won’t make another one.”

He did make another one. He made multiple other ones. The Kings never let the Blazers get closer than seven points the rest of the way.

Random thoughts

Despite the Blazers needing more depth and legit third scorer, Carmelo Anthony is not the answer. He’d just take away from the development of both Simons and Gary Trent Jr. Right now that is not the move to make. Kenneth Faried makes more sense.

Stotts should play Moses Brown more. The kid is a decent defender. He’s probably the third-best defender on the team and that’s not saying much, but still.

The Blazers need to trust Whiteside as an interior defender. The guy has multiple games where he’s had ten blocks or close to ten blocks. The Blazers collapse as a whole team on near every drive and the other team has wide-open three pointers. This has been an issue all season. This is another thing Stotts needs to fix.

Next Up

The Raptors are already in Portland waiting for the Blazers. Tip time is at 7:00 PM and we’ll get Calabro back on the call.

Blazers’ inexperience shows, lose 119-115

Damian-Lillard-scores-60-on-Brooklyn-Nets.png

The Portland Trail Blazers (3-6) fell to the Brooklyn Nets (4-5) in front of a sold out Moda Center on Friday night. Despite Damian Lillard’s heroic 60 points, Portland couldn’t outlast the Nets. First Quarter Lillard carried the Blazers through a painful opening period, scoring 11 points on 5-9 shooting.

The rest of the squad combined for nine. Spencer Dinwiddie went an efficient 3-3 from beyond the arc and Kyrie Irving added two of his own. He led the Nets with 34.

Second Quarter Portland’s shooting struggles continued in the second quarter—other than Lillard. Gary Trent Jr. and rookie Nassir Little got some valuable minutes, but Portland still took a five-point deficit into the half. Dame time came early in the second, giving us two classic step-back highlights as the half concluded. Portland’s leader finished with 26 points in the first half. Third Quarter Dame’s dominance continued in the third, but so did Brooklyn’s success.

The Nets took a three-point lead into the fourth. Other third-quarter notes include Jusuf Nurkic growing out his hair, Dinwiddie scoring 15 points in a row for Brooklyn, and a HUGE putback dunk from Skal Labissiere. Fourth Quarter Nassir Little opened the fourth with an emphatic dunk over Nicholas Claxton. Dinwiddie earned his 31st point with 10 minutes remaining. Dame’s 50th point finally gave the Blazers the lead with 7:31 to go. Terry Stotts elected to keep Little in the game for an injured Rodney Hood.

Little fouled Kyrie on a drive to the basket with 3:29 remaining. Stotts challenged the and-one but it was upheld. Portland couldn’t stop Brooklyn’s scoring in crunch time, and offensive misunderstandings defined the last few possessions of the game for the Trail Blazers. Dame fought until the bitter end. He was fouled on three straight possessions. Irving iced the game on an isolation play against Anfernee Simons, fading away for a short two.

Dame sunk a three as late as he could to get to 60.

Clippers outlast Blazers, 107-101

by Kevin Nesgoda November 7, 2019

loundame.jpg

Things haven’t been very easy for the Blazers lately. An injury-ridden frontcourt left Hassan Whiteside and Skal Labissierre as the only two pure bigs healthy enough to play. They fought hard to earn late leads Thursday night at the Staples Center, but couldn’t hold on as Kawhi Leonard and Lou Williams sank Portland’s hopes of a road upset. Portland controlled the lead for 9:42 of the fourth quarter.

Lineups

  • Clippers: Landry Shamet, Patrick Beverley, Kawhi Leonard, Patrick Patterson, Ivica Zubac
  • Blazers: Damian Lillard, CJ McCollum, Rodney Hood, Anthony Tolliver, Hassan Whiteside

Jerseys

  • The Blazers and Clippers both wore their throwback uniforms—Portland in the red 70s tributes and Los Angeles in the white Braves throwbacks.

Game Summary

First Quarter: Clippers 26, Blazers 22

Momentum Plays

  • Dame 4-point play on the second possession of the game (11:20)

  • Rodney getting open looks, although he’s only knocked down 1/3
  • Clips keep switching Dame onto Kawhi – he didn’t do too poorly
    • Dame added a steal at the end of the first quarter on Lou Will
  • CJ slow start: 1-5 shooting

Damian Lillard looked to establish his presence early, but a lackluster overall first quarter set the tone for a largely uneventful first half.

  • Montrezl Harrell rejects Mario Hezonja (10:55)
  • Hood breaks up a fastbreak on his own (8:35)
  • Harrell open dunk/Hezonja airball (7:44)
  • Skal fouls Kawhi but takes most of the punishment (6:45)

  • CJ kicks Patterson in the face while fading away (:2.1)
    • Gets flagrant foul

Trends

  • Blazers fouling – 9 in the quarter
  • Still no offensive rhythm – shot 29% on 8/28
  • Clips closing out effectively

The Clippers continued their stout defense in the second quarter. At times it seemed as though neither team wanted the lead, both missing opportunities to seize control.

Third Quarter: Clippers 70, Blazers 76

Plays

  • Whiteside gets a frustration dunk off (9:00)
  • Beverley fouls McCollum, gets very angry (8:09)

Fourth Quarter: Clippers 107, Blazers 101

Plays

  • Anfernee Simons pull-up 3
  • Hezonja dunk (6:20)
  • Whiteside dunk, then and-one (1:45, 1:15)
  • Lou fadeaway elbow (1:00)
  • Lou saucy 3 to go up by four (:31.7)

Trends

  • Ant scoring dynamically

  • Referees doing the Blazers no favors
  • Kawhi taking over
  • Whiteside tough buckets
  • Lou Williams wins the game in crunch time

Trail Blazers face the Los Angeles Clippers on November 7, 2019. Bruce Ely / Trail Blazers

Anfernee Simons came out with a bang in the fourth quarter. His dynamic scoring—a pull-up two at the buzzer, drive to the rim, catch-and-shoot three, and a Dame-esque pull-up three—kept Portland’s four-point cushion intact during the early stages of the period. The Clippers hung around, though, and were always within touching distance.

Stotts’ pick-and-rolls were causing problems for the Clips down the stretch, with Hassan Whiteside being the primary benefactor. One freed up Anfernee, who was fouled as he received the feed from Whiteside. He made the second. But it was Lou Williams who made the big shots for the Clippers, with a fadeaway elbow jumper and crossover pull-up three.

The Blazers trailed by four with half a minute remaining. After a scramble for CJ’s missed jumper with 25 seconds left, Beverley gathered the ball while stepping out of bounds. Rodney Hood pulled up and hit a baseline jumper to pull within two. Kawhi was fouled on the ensuing inbound, and converted both free throws. One missed Dame desperation three later, the game was on ice.

Looking Ahead

The Trail Blazers return to Portland tomorrow night for a 7 p.m. showdown with the Brooklyn Nets. This can be a great chance to build some much-needed momentum.

Blazers attempt to rebound against Clippers

by Kevin Nesgoda November 7, 2019
written by Kevin Nesgoda
00047_49.jpg

The last week has not been kind to the Portland Trail Blazers (3-4). They blew a 21 point lead Saturday night to the Embiidless 76ers and were thoroughly outclassed and outcoached Monday night against the G-League Warriors. Tonight they head into Los Angeles to take on a rested Kawhi Leonard and the Los Angeles Clippers (5-3).

The Clippers are on the second night of a back-to-back. They lost last night to the Milwaukee Bucks, 129-124. Montrezl Harrell scored a career-high 34 points last night, Lou Williams also had 34, but that was not a career-high for him. Quite a few players for the Clippers logged over 30 minutes last night including Harrell and Williams, Patrick Beverley and Jeff Green did as well.

But Kawhi Leonard is well rested and will be starting tonight for Doc Rivers and company.

The Defense

This has not been good for the Blazers at all this year. While they are 10th in the league in scoring (114.4 ppg) they are also 23rd in scoring defense (115.3 ppg) and 22nd in defensive rating (110.9). This friends is not a good look for the team.

On Saturday night the team gave up 84 points in the pain to the 76ers which is pretty embarrassing. Granted Hassan Whiteside was not healthy and didn’t suit up. On Monday against the Warriors after Whiteside had a great few series changing and blocking shots, Kerr changed the Warriors sets and started pulling Whiteside above the free throw line. This allowed the Warriors to run multiple back cuts and set high picks on Whiteside to free up Willie Caulie-Stein for some easy baskets.

One of the main culprits of allowed back cuts was CJ McCollum. He could not keep anyone in front of him at all against the Warriors. Ky Bowman, Damien Lee, and Jordan Poole ate him alive. Now, if the Warriors were healthy, they would not be seeing the floor, or would be playing in some gym in Santa Cruz.

CJ’s defensive ratings the last two games is a 134 and a 129.

And it’s not like anyone else is really attempting to play defense outside of Whiteside either. Whiteside, Mario Hezonja, and Kent Bazemore are the only Blazers that are a sub-110 on the season for defensive efficiency.

Terry Stotts needs to look at his rotations and get things figured out. The Clippers are a potent offensive team even without Kawhi Leonard on the floor. They are shooting nearly 50% from the floor for the season and 36% from three as well. This is pretty average for the league, but when teams play the Blazers their FG% goes up as does the 3P%.

I think we see the Clippers score north of 125 tonight.

What is up with CJ?

I harped on his defense, but his offense has not been the greatest so far this year either. He is averaging north of 20 points but has been vastly inconsistent this year. He has a -0.2 VORP, which means the Blazers would be better off with an average replacement level player than CJ. Hell, the eye test says that Damian Lillard and Anfernee Simons are a better backcourt duo right now than Dame and CJ. And Simons makes $25 million less a year than CJ.

On Monday CJ had nine first half points and didn’t score again until the final three minutes of the game. This is not the first time this has happened this season. You forget he’s on the floor for long stretches of time on offense, then curses at him to play defense on the other end. If it wasn’t for that you might not know he was even playing.

CJ was projected to compete for an All-Star slot this year. So far I think we can line him up for the MRP or the Most Regressed Player award.

Tonight CJ is going to have to deal with a combination of Leonard or Beverley on the defensive end. It might not be the night for him to get back on track.

Rodney Hood

Hood is probably going to be the one with a favorable matchup on the offensive end. He will either draw Landry Shamet, maybe even Patrick Patterson. Though, I think Patterson will be on Hezonja or Anthony Tolliver to start the game. The Blazers are going to need Hood to have a hot shooting night as he did against the 76ers. He was slow on Monday with that bruised left knee, so hopefully, he can rebound tonight and play an above-average game. If the Blazers are to have a chance then Hood needs to score 15 or more points this evening.

The Benches

The Clippers boast one of the deeper benches in all of the NBA. In fact, they have probably the best bench in the league. The Blazers bench is pretty lacking at the moment. It’s unclear of Harrell is going to start again tonight or come off the bench with Lou Williams.

The Blazers don’t have the firepower to match the Clippers, unless Simons and Skal Labissiere combine for sixty points off the bench tonight.

Prediction

I’m going to take the Clippers in this 132-117. Lillard scores 40 and keeps the Blazers close, but Kawhi and Lou Williams break any and all hopes of a victory with a crushing 4th quarter.

Zach Collins to miss four months after shoulder surgery

by Kevin Nesgoda November 5, 2019
written by Kevin Nesgoda
Zach-Collins-1.jpg

Portland Trail Blazers starting power forward Zach Collins underwent shoulder surgery to repair his left labrum on Tuesday, November 5th. The third-year big was poised for a breakout season after joining the starting rotation, but is now expected to “be re-evaluated in four months,” according to the Blazers’ press release.

Collins dislocated the shoulder in the third quarter of Portland’s win against the Dallas Mavericks on Sunday, October 27th. He showed signs of discomfort immediately, removing himself from the game and heading to the locker room.

Portland will have to rely on Anthony Tolliver, Mario Hezonja, and Skal Labissiere to pick up the slack of Collins’ absence. Tolliver has been starting in Collins’ place so far, but Portland may need some extra help in the frontcourt, even if they are already deep into the luxury tax.

The Blazers are thin at the forward and center positions as is. Starting center Jusuf Nurkic is out for most of the season with a broken leg and veteran Pau Gasol has yet to see the court after toe issues from last May.

Collins was averaging 9 points, 4 rebounds, and 2 assists on 55.3 eFG% in just under 29 minutes per game this season.
