Thoughts on Bucks bashing the Blazers brains out

by Kevin Nesgoda February 2, 2021
written by Kevin Nesgoda

The Milwaukee Bucks have the highest scoring offense in all of the NBA and they are playing a banged up and defense adverse Portland Trail Blazer squad. For the Blazers to be competitive in this game they were going to have to match shot for shot with the Bucks.

In the first quarter they almost did that. The Bucks made eight three pointers and the Blazers nearly matched that by hitting seven of their own. The thing is they also let the Bucks shoot 66% from the field overall while shooting under 45% themselves.

The turnovers did not help either. It’s not like the Blazers don’t have good ball handlers outside of Damian Lillard and CJ McCollum, both Anfernee Simons and Gary Trent Jr. can run point, and Rodney Hood has some experience as a point forward in his day. Tonight, the ball handlers weren’t an issue, it was lazy passes from the perimeter to the middle of the floor.

It’s like they lack the fire to push themselves over the edge sometimes and I think that it comes down from the top and Terry Stotts. It seems like there is not enough accountability on this team.

A bright spot that I absolutely loved in the quarter was the play of Nassir Little. He had six points and played some really aggressive defense against both Middleton and Giannis. That three point shot was also looking really nice.

Over the first five minutes and change the Blazers held the Bucks to only eight points to start the second quarter. Granted, the Bucks did not have a single starter on the floor over that period of time. As soon as the starters came back on the floor they scored 13 points over the next two minutes to force the Blazers to call a timeout.

Portland had a chance to cut the lead way down and they did get it down to six, but then the turnovers started to mount again and the defense started to let Milwaukee (specifically Bryn Forbes) knock down threes to start to push the lead back up.

Enes Kanter has had his hand on a lot of almost offensive rebounds, but those almost rebounds kept the Blazers on the offensive end while the Bucks were happy to let a guy leak out. Three or four Bucks would fight for the ball, get it, and hit the leaker out for an easy basket.

For the most part Kanter was the only one attempting to rebound the ball on the offensive end for Portland. Little did his best when he was in there to offer some support, he was able to convert a rebound for an and-1.

And all the while the rest of the team is hanging out just inside the three-point line not doing a damn thing. They aren’t helping get the rebound and they aren’t covering the leakers. They aren’t doing anything. It’s frustrating and it comes down to fundamentals. On the plane to DC all iPads should have film of the leakers shown on repeat.

They’d only get one view of it before the plane landed though.

Not a lot of positives in the first half. The team is down 23 and the bench has been outscored 33-14. And yes, I know, half the bench is in the starting lineup. Maybe it’s time for the Blazers to look into different team doctors. Maybe a shaman?

Little starts off the second half with some nice defense on Giannis, causing a miss, got a rebound, seconds later he was left wide open in the corner for a three-pointer, then he got a steal. It just sucks that his energy has not been picked up by the rest of the team.

Damian Lillard really gets the short end of the stick on a lot of calls. On a drive to the paint, his left arm was grabbed, literally grabbed, by Brook Lopez in front of two officials as he was going up for a layup and there was no call.

Lopez knocked down a three about nine seconds later.

In this game, Dame did try to draw contact on a possession instead of looking for a shot. He was upset that he did not get a call, but he wasn’t looking for a shot and the refs knew it. Most nights he is fouled on a shot but doesn’t get the call. He deserves the calls in most situations as he is legit fouled. Tonight is the first time I’ve seen him go foul hunting like James Harden and it got him out of his game.

With the Blazers down by 34 with two and a half left in the third, Dame’s night is more than likely done.

The Blazers really need to fill out their roster. Their bench is thin and there are some guys on the wire that could contribute in some sort of way for the Blazers in spots of need. There aren’t guys on that list that will instantly be a second or third option, but they provide depth in case of a forty point ass-whooping.

At least it finally looks like Nassir Little can be a real rotation piece going forward. In the fourth, he showed a lot more bucket skills and even ran the point a few times. He got a career-high 30 points

Blazers almost complete amazing comeback, fall to Spurs, 113-110

by Kevin Nesgoda October 28, 2019
written by Kevin Nesgoda
Kent-Bazemore-blocks-Dejounte-Murray.png

The Blazers were in San Antonio tonight looking to get their third win of the season in San Antonio and early on things looked promising as the Blazers jumped out to a 23-4 lead. From there the legs got tired and the Spurs behind DeMar DeRozan and Bryn Forbes defeated the Blazers, 113-110

You could not ask for much more from the Blazers in the first quarter from the Blazers. CJ McCollum continued his hot streak, Rodney Hood had a nice start, and Kent Bazemore comes in playing lights out defense. Baze had some highlight-reel chase-down blocks. One came on a much faster Dejounte Murray early in the 2nd. I’m still not sure how he caught him. He turned on a gear I didn’t know he had. The second came when he chased down a LaMarcus Aldridge turn around jumper on the low block. Baze was on the opposite side of the floor at the top or arch when Aldridge caught the ball.

The Spurs started chipping at the lead through the second quarter. The Blazers started missing shots and DeRozan started making them. The Spurs cut the lead to six at half time. Ending the quarter on a heat streak. It continued in the third with the Spurs outscoring the Blazers by 17, 37-20

Damian Lillard shooting a Westbrookian 3-19 from the field through the first three quarters did not help matters.

Behind some hot shoot by Patty Mills the Spurs pushed the lead to 19 points with about five minutes left to go. Then Lillard started clicking and the Blazers went on a 20-2 run, cutting the lead down to one with just over a minute to go.

The Spurs pushed it back up to five points with 47 seconds left after a soft shot by Derrick White and a couple of free throws by LaMarcus Aldridge. The Blazers had a couple of chances to tie the game with under 20 seconds to go, but Dame and Anthony Tolliver both missed three-pointers.

The door was not closed though.

DeRozan was fouled with 7.8 seconds left and missed both free throws. The Spurs led 113-110 and Portland had one more chance to tie the game. Lillard got a great look at the shot and the ball was three-quarters of the way down and it bounced out. I’m not sure how that didn’t stay down.

Lillard scored the last 18 points for the Blazers to end the game. He finished with 28, 9, and 7 tonight. He only had one turnover tonight.

CJ finished with 27, Hood had 11, Simons and Skal Labissiere each had 10.

Random thoughts

Anfernee Simons to give the Blazers really good minutes at both backcourt positions. I’d like to see him be a bit more of a facilitator, but the kid can score.

The Blazers missed Zach Collins tonight.

I thought that Terry Stotts would pull the starters out down by 19 with just over five minutes left. The Blazers almost made a great comeback. This is why he is a head coach in the NBA and we sit at home and write about it. Terry Stotts plays to win the game!

No double-double tonight for Hassan Whiteside. He seemed a step off tonight. He played a lot the night before.

The Blazers lost that lead tonight because they were tired and just stopped playing when they got up 19. You could tell the Spurs were the fresher team. Once the Spurs got up 19 they started to play tight and didn’t close out. But you just can’t rule out Damian Lillard on any night though. He might be on an MVP season right now.

The Blazers have Tuesday off before they head up to Oklahoma City to finish up their road trip.

Blazers @ Spurs Preview

by Kevin Nesgoda October 28, 2019

blazersvsspurs.jpg

The Portland Trail Blazers (2-1) will head to San Antonio to face the Spurs (2-0) on the second night of a Texas-sized back-to-back. Last night, the Blazers pulled off a thrilling comeback victory against Luka Doncic and the Dallas Mavericks. The Blazers will be without starting big man Zach Collins after he separated his left shoulder in the third quarter. Although Collins’ timetable is still up in the air going forward, but he is definitely out for tonight.

Zach’s injury leaves a gaping hole in an already-thin rotation of Blazers bigs: Jusuf Nurkic is out for probably half the season and Pau Gasol still isn’t healthy. That leaves Hassan Whiteside and Skal Labissiere as the Blazers’ only remaining pure bigs. Mario Hezonja was forced to play center against Kristaps Porzingis down the stretch after Whiteside fouled out, so he’s my best bet to take Zach’s starting spot.

Expected Starting Lineups:

  • Portland: Damian Lillard, CJ McCollum, Rodney Hood, Mario Hezonja, Hassan Whiteside
  • San Antonio: Dejounte Murray, Bryn Forbes, DeMar DeRozan, LaMarcus Aldridge, Trey Lyles

Portland got huge offensive contributions from their backcourt last night (Dame had 30 points; Cj 28) but it was the second-half defense that turned the game around. Dallas scored 71 in the first half and only 48 in the second.

The Spurs are rounding out a third game of their opening homestand, most recently defeating the Washington Wizards 124-122 in their last game behind a game-winning bucket from DeMar DeRozan, who went 5-for-6 in the final quarter.

San Antonio are six-point favorites. They have beaten the Knicks and Wizards so far, but this will be their first true test against a Western Conference opponent.

Ranking the 2019-20 NBA Shooting Guards

by Kevin Nesgoda October 23, 2019
written by Kevin Nesgoda
James_Harden.jpg

The shooting guard spot is slowly merging into the small forward spot, well this is positionless basketball coming into fruition. There are a lot of great players at this position and there are quite a few bad ones. There is also a lot of potential for some really good players that I have ranked pretty low. Guys like Garland and Barrett. They had some decent showings in the preseason, but can they do it over 70+ games (hopefully 82) over the course of the year?

30. Dillon Brooks

I really like Brooks, I think he’d make a great bench role player somewhere. He’s not an everyday starter in the league for a fringe playoff team, but for a team that might win 35 games, he’ll do.

29. Bryn Forbes

Forbes is such a Gregg Popovich player. He’s not going to do anything spectacular, but he’s going to play hard.

28. Darius Garland

I hate judging rookies. Especially rookies that barely played their last year in college. Garland seems healthy and torched some nets in the preseason. Let’s see how he does every night.

27. Josh Okogie

He won’t score a lot and he’ll try on defense. He tries… he tries.

26. RJ Barrett

Barrett has a lot of good qualities, he can score, the potential to be a plus defender, but he seems to disappear in games. I said the same thing about James Harden early in his career too.

25. Bruce Brown Jr.

If you play in Detroit does anyone really see you play? Brown is a nice player, he has some low projections this year and they are warranted. I think he can play a little bit above himself and deliver a quality year for the Pistons.

24. Tyler Herro

He won the job over Dion Waiters, but that’s not saying much. Herro might have the smoothest shot out of all the rookies.

23. Dwayne Bacon

I’m shocked he’s in his third year already. He’s improved year after year and I’m not sure he’s going to be a little bit better than last year.

22. Wesley Matthews

He was once one of the best lockdown defenders on the perimeter but after the knee issues this is no longer the case. He’s a decent rotational body and he can hide out in Milwaukee and be protected on both ends of the court.

21. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander

This is not his normal position (obviously) and after the Thunder move Chris Paul he’ll get moved over the PG list. The problem is we don’t know who can take on that massive Paul contract.

20. Tim Hardaway Jr.

He’s a solid third option for the Mavericks. He can score a lot of points in a hurry (like dad) and he can give up just as many on the defensive end. That might be Dallas’ plan though, score as many points as possible and hope to god the other team doesn’t score more.

19. Kevin Huerter

I think we’re going to see a big year from the former Terp. His jump really needs to come on defense. He’s got all the tools in his offensive repertoire to be a 17-20 point scorer this year.

18. Evan Fournier

He’s a solid complementary player. He doesn’t need to be the focal point of the offense and plays decent defense.

17. Gary Harris

The oft-injured guard is great when healthy. He was once relied upon for points, but with the emergence of basically every other starter, he’s now the fourth or even fifth option on the floor when starting.

16. Danny Green

He’s going to be the Lakers’ third scorer and that’s an issue. With how hot and cold Green is — yeah, don’t rely on Green to be an every night 25 point scorer.

15. Landry Shamet

With Paul George out he’s a solid third or fourth option for the Clippers. I would love to see him work with Bev and improve himself on the defensive end of the floor.

14. Buddy Hield

There is talk that this could be an All-Star year for Hield. The dude will be the primary threat for the Kings outside and has the potential to lead the team in scoring. I think we could get a 50 point game out of him this coming year.

13. Josh Richardson

He’s going to be a piece of that defensive wall in Philly. Any time that he scores north of 15 points on top of playing good defense is great for Brett Brown and company.

12. Jaylen Brown

Brown will average close to 20 points a game this year and play some solid lockdown defense. Mix in some poster dunks and playing too fast and we have Jaylen Brown.

11. Caris LeVert

Without Kevin Durant, LeVert is going to be the second option next to Kyrie Irving. He’s not a bad defender, but he can improve.

10. Fred VanVleet

Freddy is going to have a bit of a dual role this year. He’s going to start at the two and then transition to the one when Lowry heads to the bench. He’s got a great chance to average career highs in most stats.

9. D’Angelo Russell

This might be Russell’s most natural position. The dude has never met a shot he doesn’t like. His defensive numbers have improved year after year. Steve Kerr is going to make sure they improve even more.

8. Zach LaVine

There is an opening for an All-Star guard in the East this season. He has all the talent in the world to lock that down for the next few years. He has to stay healthy and has to stop making those dumb mistakes throughout the game.

7. Jrue Holiday

Holiday is one of the best guys in the league, not necessarily player, but just a solid dude. There is a lot of young talent around him in New Orleans, it’ll be interesting to see how he fits in with those guys. he should be the Pels leading scorer this season.

6. Devin Booker

Booker is going to score a ton of points this year. He’s on my list to be one of the three leading scorers in the league this season. On defense, he’s not great. Is is so much fun to watch offensively though.

5. Victor Oladipo

He’s one of the better all-around players at the position. He’s good offensively and good defensively. Hopefully he can come back as close to normal as possible. He’s looked good in some of the practices I’ve gotten to see him.

4. CJ McCollum

CJ is going to push for an All-Star push this year and I think he gets it. The marketing going for him is too strong right now. Sadly, as his points have gone up his defensive efficiency has gone down. Portland needs a lockdown perimeter defender and he’s their best bet.

3. Donovan Mitchell

I look forward to Donovan not needing to shoulder the whole load for the Jazz this year. That will relax him and he’ll be much more efficient because of it. I think he’ll be a 25 point guy this year and play some good defense.

2. Bradley Beal

For the Wizards to be remotely competitive he’s going to have to score almost sixty points a night. He won’t score that much, but he’s going to need to. He’s a leader, he is seemingly a good dude. Wish he was in a better spot.

1. James Harden

With Russell Westbrook in town, he’s not going to need to score so much this year and maybe we’ll see a little less ISO offense. I doubt it, but the dude is going to put up a lot of points, get a lot of assists, and spend more time at the free-throw line than his house.
