Diego Valeri will leave Portland for his former Argentine club, Lanús, according to a report from César Luis Merlo of TyC Sports.

“The footballer has already made the decision to return,” Merlo tweeted. “If he passes the medical examination, he will sign for one year.”

Rumors of Valeri’s departure brewed over the past few weeks. He played 158 matches for Lanús from 2003-09.

Valeri was signed as a Designated Player for the Timbers in 2013. He moved to a Targeted Allocation Money contract in 2018 after a brief negotiation with the club.

Valeri led the Timbers to a MLS Cup in 2015, scoring in the first minute. He won the MLS MVP award in 2017 and is widely regarded as a club legend.
