Whitecaps Transfer Talk: Let’s Welcome The Young Brazilian, Caio Alexandre!!

by Michael Martinez

Hello there! I told you guys there was going to be some news coming out. Time for some more transfer updates, courtesy of me!

There have been some rumors circulating since last year that the Whitecaps have been inquiring about 22 year old Brazilian CM Caio Alexandre. The young midfielder currently plays for Botafogo of the Brazilian Serie A. There were some talks happening after the season ended, but ultimately the deal fell through… WELL, as of late February, those transfer talks have started up again! Then as of this morning, the deal is done!! Caio Alexandre is going to be a Whitecap.

Caio Alexandre has agreed to a four-year contract through 2024. The Brazilian will officially join the roster pending receipt of his International Transfer Certificate, medical, work permit and visa. He will also be joining new winger, Caicedo, signed under the new U22 initiative. Don’t worry though! We are still using our last DP spot but there is not much news on that front yet. No concrete fee as of yet, but to my understanding it’s supposed to be a significant amount.

We all kind of knew there was something getting ready to be announced because the Whitecaps tweeted out this late last night:

We all know that the Whitecaps Twitter admin is a bit of a troll, but they just don’t tweet something like that to mess with us.

It is my understanding that the Whitecaps see Alexandre as more of a dynamic CM as opposed to a normal CDM. He is known to play as a #8 but also tends to sit a little deep as well. Although recently, he has been deployed as a defensive midfielder for Botafogo so that could give us an idea of how the Whitecaps could line up.

The young Brazilian has 5 goals in 50 matches since Botafogo’s promotion to Brazil’s Serie A. Alexandre was one of the more stand out players in the 2020 season. He is seen as a very important asset of the club, which has already been receiving inquiries about the player’s situation. Most of which are from across Europe.

With is in mind, the Whitecaps could start the season in a traditional 4-3-3 with Baldi and Alexandre at the two 8’s. At least until our DP #10 gets signed. Then at that point I feel the formation above will be the one that Marc decides to go with. It just makes the most sense with our style of play. If Marc wants to continue with the possession style play then having Alexandre as the roaming 8 and Bikel hanging back as a destroyer will be key.

Sporting Director, Axel Schuster on the youngster coming to Vancouver:

“We are very pleased to welcome Caio Alexandre, who embraced our vision here in Vancouver, despite him also having offers from clubs in Brazil,”“We are building a young, energetic team with a very clear identity and expectation. In his young age, he has already proven he can perform in one of the top 10 leagues in the world. The calendar will be very demanding this year and adding a player with Caio’s qualities will only improve our group.”

I am most excited about this transfer because a signing like this means that the Whitecaps mean business. They want to compete with the big dogs in the western conference. We have a young team who wants to fight for every match and leave it all on the pitch. I know I have criticized couch Marc dos Santos a lot this last year, but I will have to agree that he is creating a culture here in Vancouver. He is getting the players to play for his vision and represent the club.

Ultimately, if the Whitecaps can create more fluidity through tactics, field a more balanced roster, and maintain their efficiency converting progressive passes into goals, then things will most certainly be looking up for the upcoming season. I feel like just based on the current signings, then we have a much more balanced team than last year. Now we just wait for our #10 then the team will be looking ready to take on MLS.
